Just wanted a general consensus please ladies (if that is ever possible??) - what are the thoughts on things that bring labour on (raspberry leaf tea, pineapple etc) Do they work or not?

ds 1 lots of raspleaf tea- 2 weeks early
ds2 raspleaf tea- 3 days early
ds3 raspleaf tea (now v smug about it), 2 pineapples a day, a curry every night from 40 weeks and lots of bonking - 11 days later had to be induced.
I no longer believe but if i ever fell pg again with no 4 I'd do it all again.

i have heard of the castor oil thing too but i know someone that did it and never brought on labour but gave them an upset tummy and the squits whilst in labour wouldnt be the one
im one of the lucky ones
DD1 was a week early quite long labour but she was fine.
DS a day early longish labour but was fine.
DD2 was 2 weeks early and had to have emergence c section due to being breach ,(stupid consultant wouldnt book me in until a day before due date ).
all in all ladies your babies will come when there ready good luck though .

RL Tea - harmless, tastes okay, better for you than loads of caffinated drinks, so why not? But I would personally struggle to pinpoint how it may have helped.

blondieminx · 03/05/2010 01:10

As others have said, they just come when they are ready. But using birthing balls to encourage the baby into a good position and drinking RLT to encourage efficient contractions are good ways of feeling like you are doing SOMETHING to get the little bugger out your darling baby to come and meet you a bit quicker ;-)

I had purigo of pregnancy (think stinging nettle rash - utterly hideous) and tried everything to try and get labour started. She arrived 6 days late and in fact on the morning of the day I was booked to be induced. Good luck!

Ds1 6 weeks early, horrendous labour, weak contractions.

Ds2 I started drinking Rl tea at 37 weeks, he was born the day after his due date unplanned homebirth, massively strong contractions the whole thing was done and dusted in 2 hours. I actually enjoyed it!!

I didn't have RL tea with dd1, had a fast labour. Did have RL tea with dd2 (I liked it!) and had a super fast labour. A bit unscientific - probably more to do with being on baby no 2. I would drink it if you like it...

I was also quite religious with the almond oil with dd1 and had a bit of tearing, didn't bother much when pregnant with dd2 and no tearing at all. It was fun to do tho, so again seems like it can't do any harm.

I don't think anything works, I tried all of the above and ds came 12 days late. Not even 3 sweeps could get him to come. I think he came when he was good and ready, 12 hours before they were going to incuce me

tardis · 03/05/2010 11:51

i tried nearly everything but nothing worked for me.
my midwife said that the babies come when they want...

Raspberry leaf tea - I didn't try it in the end but my friend, who is a health visitor, said that although the official advice is that it doesn't work she and her colleagues think there might be something in it (entirely off the record of course). Good Luck.

girlsyearapart · 03/05/2010 14:08

Did the r leaf tablets as didn't like the tea and had dd1 on her due date and dd2 11 days early.

The best thing is to plan something you really want to do then you'll go into labour..

With dd2 I managed the shop at asda for the party food then went into labour that night and missed dd1s 1st birthday party Still galls me now to see the photos of MIL holding her up to blow out the candle..

The night before dd1 arrived I had a glass of champagne at my sisters 40th and my nephew knocked on my tummy and asked for his cousin to come out and meet him so you could try that!

Have heard good reports about reflexology have you tried that?

shipsladyg · 11/05/2010 12:17

I've started on the Raspberry leaf tea, the starflower (borage oil) pessaries and Evening Primrose Oil capsules. OK so DH wants me to keep my legs crossed until the start of Wimbledon (like he's gonna get the chance to watch it! ) but I'd prefer the earlier option. Hopefully baby will be agreeable on that.
