I'm on the road to requesting an ELCS for my second child.

I don't particularly want to go over it all, but I'm just trying to establish in my head under what circustances a VB would be acceptable to me.

The only thing I can possibly consider at the moment is early induction with epidural in place and a guarantee to go to CS at the first indicaion of trouble.

I know this is most people on MN's worst-case nightmare birth, but hey, I must be a weirdo!

Anyway, I know the risk of instruments, c-s and other conplications etc is higher with induction. I'm just wondering if the risk of these complications are lower if you have already had one VB or if induction is safer after VB.

Im not a midwife but have had 2 VB's (one spontaneous and one induced), I had no problems with this induction, all it took was one prostin and ds1 arrived after 6 hours of contractions.
However when I was induced with no.3 nothing shifted him, I had in excess of 5 sweeps, one propess inserton, followed by prostin insertion followed by an ARM.
He was finally delivered by EMCS.

So IME induction is not affected by how many babies youve had or how many VB's

Thanks mears, sounds like the risks are still there then.

I'm sorry about your third birth - I've read your story on here and it sounds absolutely terrible

I would say the risk of instruments, etc are still there but would be lower. Because you've had a vagianal birth before the chances are that you will labour quicker, have a shorter 2nd stage (pushing) and therefore there is less time for complications to arise and your body is more likely to do the pushing itself without needing a ventouse/forceps.

But because you would have continous monitoring there is a raised risk of it being the beginning of a cascade of intervention, more likely to pick up something on the monitoring which then results in a lscs/instrumental. Plus the epidural will make it harder to push which can raise the risk of an instrumental, but less of a risk with it being your 2nd baby.

Why do you want an early induction?
