I'm 37+2 weeks with my first baby. I have chronic asthma and am one of the statistics that says 1 in 3 pregnant women will have worsened symptoms. Well I've been put on oral steroids twice in this pregnancy - never been on them before, 2 lots of antibiotics for chest infections and I also have GERD which exacerbates the bronchospasms. My GP said that I have a case for early induction as the ever growing pressure of the baby is putting real strain on my lungs. But my consultant obstetrician has just turned her nose up at me twice about it. I'm seeing my respiratory consultant on Friday and am really hoping she will file a case for me. I'm terrified of going up to 2 weeks overdue which I know is common for first babies. That added baby weight will make me really struggle Please advise.

I have medical problems too (not asthma though) and reached the end of my tether two weeks ago with the pain (not pregnancy pain). I had seen my MW the week before who said if I was still struggling then to contact my GP, which I did. She was spectacularly unhelpful and when I asked for induction she replied 'that's a bit drastic'. I then phoned the MW at the hospital who tried to put me off 'of course you will be uncomfortable at this stage'. I eventually got to see my consultant and have been told that I can be induced a week after my due date (I'm full term tomorrow with no sign that he wants to show up) not based on obstetric reasons but on humane reasons (doc's words).

I think talking to your resp consultant is a good idea if you are having no luck with your baby consultant. Can you go with some moral support? Could your GP contact your baby doc?

Sorry I couldn't be more help but just wanted to say keep asking different people as some tend to be dismissive others are massively supportive.

Hi first1, I had bad asthma with my second child, was even hospitalized at 24 weeks and had steroids etc. I was induced at 38 weeks, but because of high bp. I don't think your chances are high of being induced early because of the asthma - it would have to be a condition that was putting either you or the baby at risk, and all they will do is continue to monitor and control your asthma at this point. I'm afraid your discomfort doesn't come into it! However as Jayfer says they may well induce you at 41 weeks if you ask, as this is the starting date for inductions anyway. Really sorry to not have anything more positive to say - I know how uncomfortable it is and I wish you all the best!
