Do they have to monitor you for second VBAC?

I'm having my third child and was wondering if they have to monitor you quite so closely with a second VBAC. Does your risk of scar rupture go down once you have had a successful vbac ? Was contemplating a water birth.

I hate it when you think of questions after the consultant has left the room !

I'm not sure but I think you are still classed as 'high risk' even if you've had a Vbac as scar rupture is still a possibility.
However maybe it depends on your hospital?I'm going for my first Vbac in a couple of weeks and I can have a water birth but they are very pro Vbac there.

I supported a client with her two VBAC's (she is a GP)
The first VBAC she had constant monitoring, venflon etc
The second VBAC consultant agreed for her to use the MLU, had intermittent monitoring, no vaginal exams and a natural third stage.
(See here for her birth stories if you interested in reading them)

Does your hospital have telemetric monitoring? It's wireless monitoring which can be used in the pool. I was supposed to be doing this for my second VBAC, but ended up with an induction (which was a great birth by the way) so didn't get in the pool.

Sometimes, you're best asking the MWs rather than the docs. Do you have a decent community MW? It was my community MW who gave me all the right info (doctor 'wasn't sure' that wireless monitors could be used in water) then made sure I got to speak to the consultant MW at the hospital, who was great and supported me in my requests for my birth.

Good luck!

Selina those are some lovely birth stories !

Poledra - I shall talk to my midwife as I am sure the doctors are clueless where I am.

Thanks for the advice !

Glad you liked them!
Find out if there is a Consultant midwife at you're hospital, they are often much more helpful in planning VBAC care.

Hi OP.

Most hospitals will initially probably still treat you as a first time VBAC (frustratingly) as you still have a scar which must endure 'trial'. However you have the advantage of a vaginal birth as evidence to quote at them - so make use of it! Talk about what worked/didnt work at your vaginal birth and get your research together on VBAC to blind them with.

You probably already know that you have the best chance of a successful VB if:
a) you are not induced and are allowed to go into spontaneous labour;
b)you are able to labour as actively as possible.

Insist on these conditions and make plans for what will you do if, at any stage, the ideal scenario becomes impossible (ie. if you do not labour spontaneously withinn 42 weeks -will you go straight for c-section?).
This happened to me, so think ahead.
Good luck xxx

I assumed it would be back to situation normal but apparently not. our hospital treats all vbacers the same - cfm, no pool etc. I went for home birth and pool instead. was great

toccatanfudge · 28/04/2010 23:41

I've had 2VBAC's - second one birth story is here it's quite long.

Jist of it is that I refused to be continously monitored and there were no real issues.

APassionateWoman · 28/04/2010 23:50

Great fucking birth story toccata!

Sorry for swearing. It's just that I had hoped for a VBAC and in the end had to have a second section, for quite serious medical reasons and was lovely, actually...but....always so lovely to hear about someone who planned for their VBAC and actually got it without much nonsense. Beautiful. You must be very pleased and a little bit proud

APW - you know I just got a little bit teary as I searched for the birth story (as I knew i'd posted in on here at the time) and ended up reading my birth announcent thread as well as my birth story again

APassionateWoman · 29/04/2010 00:08

Gorgeous. You should be teary (in a good way!).

It is absolutely wonderful when a woman gets the birth she wants against all odds. I was choked reading it. Well done.

DefNotYummyMummy · 29/04/2010 22:29

Lovely birth story. V. funny how they kept on trying to get you to move away from your birth plan and you were having none of it. No wonder you're happy with this one !

I had an enforced natural labour with my VBAC (epidural failed). I am trying to research on how to cope with pain so I wont feel the need to try for one this time.

I shall talk to the midwife about monitoring and just stick to my guns.

Thanks for the stories.

xx

HI

Sorry to interrupt, but does anyone know why cfm is neeed for vbac?? I can't understand how it could help monitor for the scar tearing and why a vbac baby is more likely to get into trouble...

Thanks
