Is it true that birth of second child will go faster than the first?
My first came very fast 1.5-2 hours total labour.. will my second be faster?

Just wondering what your experiences were....

similar experience with 1st, 2 hours from 1st contraction.

2nd was 15mins from 1st contraction.

elliepac · 26/04/2010 16:46

First was days long (at least it felt like it) but was 27 hours in total, not sure how long actual 'proper' contractions were, too high to notice but I think it was around 9 hours. Drugs, Ventouse, episiotomy the works.

Second 1/12 hours of 'proper' contractions, 20 mins of pushing and she was there despite midwife telling me that there was no way I could be ready to push yet. Only gas and air and nothing else. So yes, much faster and much easier.

elliepac · 26/04/2010 16:46

That should say 1 1/2 hours, sorry.

trixymalixy · 26/04/2010 16:57

My 2nd birth was slower and more painful.

sabinar · 26/04/2010 17:08

my first was 9hrs and second was 2hrs.
so yes, was faster for me.

wow, I can't imagine having a 2hr labour for my first child - that would have been pretty intense! well done.

LinzerTorte · 26/04/2010 17:10

My second was much quicker - the 1st was about 12 hours, 2nd two hours from start to finish. I only made it to the hospital with about 10 minutes to spare, so was worried I wouldn't make it in time with no. 3 (but ended up having an emergency Caesarean).

EccentricaGallumbits · 26/04/2010 17:19

number 1 was 4.5 hours. number 2 20 minutes. very intense.

ohnelly · 26/04/2010 17:23

mine were both about the same - 8hrs from starting contractions to baby being born

peppapighastakenovermylife · 26/04/2010 17:49

First was 1.5 hours, second was 5 hours.

Second was much nicer

saltyseadog · 26/04/2010 17:51

First was 13 hours, second was 10 hours but much more chilled

First was 12 hour labour, 2 hours of pushing, 3rd degree tear.

Second was a few hours of very mild, infrequent contractions, then a sudden almighty contraction followed by urge to push. Baby born after a couple of pushes and delivered by paramedics. So (relatively) painless but a bit of a shock arrival!

HarriedWithChildren · 26/04/2010 21:08

Snap Mrs G.
DC1 Induced, 12h, forceps, 3rd degree tear
DC2 6h "textbook"
DC3 8h erratic contractions, went into hospital found I was 2cm, no change 2h later, went home, huge contraction and with barely a push baby delivered by DH.

The thought that nothing could be as bad as DC1's birth kept me going.

FrozenNorth · 26/04/2010 22:25

First: induced, 6 hours from start (they broke my waters) to baby, quite nice and controlled, epidural.
Second: not induced, 90 mins from slight achiness to baby, 5 weeks early. No pain relief, a bit traumatic to be honest.

I can understand why you're concerned given the length of your first labour, though I'm told that the positioning of the baby can make a massive difference (a friend had a much longer 2nd one than her first speedy labour and midwife said it was due to the baby being 'back to back').

Rindercella · 26/04/2010 22:29

Wow, there are some fast labours on here!

My first was 7 hours from first pain to DD1 being born.

My second was 3 hrs 20 mins from first pain to DD2 being born - so pretty much as I expected.

Backinthebox · 26/04/2010 22:47

As my first labour was 42 hrs, I'm hoping the second one is quicker!

neolara · 26/04/2010 22:53

First labour was fast - 4 1/2 hours from first twinge to birth.

Second labour was very similar - about 4 hours. I was surprised as had expected it to be VERY quick. It was much less painful and almost enjoyable!

(Third labour on the other hand was a bit of a shock - thirty mins start to finish, ending with my dh delivering dd.)

Catz · 26/04/2010 23:05

DC1 - 2 days
DC2 - 2 hours (and that includes a 45 min 3rd stage so 1 1/4 really)

Hope it is quicker for you too backinthebox.I have to say that when a midwife popped by to see how I was an hour in (having lost waters but not been dilated at all an hour earlier) I told her that it was awful and I wanted drugs as I was probably only 2 cm with a day or more to go. Luckily I was in transition and only had 15 mins to go!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 26/04/2010 23:14

1- 12 hrs
2- 6 hrs
3- 4 hrs
4- 3 hrs

heth1980 · 27/04/2010 07:28

DD1 - born 6 hours after 1st contraction
DD2 - born 3 hours after 1st contraction.

My MW told me that they would generally expect a 2nd labour to be about half the length of the 1st........she was spot on in my case! I'll be a bit worried if we decide to go for a 3rd!
