Anyone been induced after previous spontaneous births, need some reassurance

Despite this being number 4 I am getting myself all stressed about being induced probably next week.

I have severe SPD, three other young DC, a DP who works 45 mins away at least and previous fast labours. Due to all of this I asked my consultant if I could be induced in hospital this time (last two were homebirths), she immediately agreed and said that it would probably take no more than breaking my waters to kick me off.

Now I am getting a bit stressed at the thought of being induced, I have gone into labour naturally 3 times and had very straightforward births, I feel like I am interfering with this process, also everyone is telling me how bad induction is and how long it can take.

Consultant wanted to induce at 39 weeks but I asked to wait until I was term as surely that would mean I would be more ready to go.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of induction after previous spontaneous births???

I was induced at 38 weeks with the second and it was fine - only needed 1 pessary and labour started pretty quick (my first was also a bit early so I think I wouldn't have gone to 40 weeks even if I hadn't been induced). When I went in to be induced they told me that because I'd already had a successful spontaneous labour that the odds were in favour of a successful induction. So I'd say that the chances of it being successful for you look good! Good luck x

Oh and I should add that labour was fast and straightforward

Hi...I was in exactly your position 10 weeks ago. First 3 children all spontaneous, dd1 @40, ds1 @40+13, dd2@40+11. Due to wanting a specific consultant, I opted to be induced at 40 weeks with ds 2. Very worried about pain, speed etc as all previous were spontaneous, with waters being broken immediately before delivery, lasting 39 hours, 10 hours, then 6 hours start to finish, all with late stage epidurals. I went in, they broke waters, which I was dreading, but was uncomfortable not painful , waited 3 hours, no contractions, so was put on drip, cons started immediately, managed for 3 hours without epi, go to 6 cm, then had epi and ds2 born an hour later. Was SO much better than I had thought. 3 good labours behind you and you should be fine. Good luck.

Yes, I was induced after 2 previous VBs, 1 of them spontaneous.

They wanted to insert a prostin when they examined me (was admitted as emergency with very high BP), I refused until bloods came back. But before they did got pushed into ARM, which was done with great difficulty. I started contracting but didn't dilate at all until they put the evil synto up eight hours later (they wanted to do it a lot sooner). Start to finish was about 11 hours. That was my third birth. But reading your other replies, it looks as though I am hugely in the minority, so I wish you every good wish for your induction (spd is horrible isn't it?)

I had an induction with DC2 (I was +12 days which was their cut-off). I had the pessary at 5pm, ate dinner at 6pm, regular contractions by 6.30pm, 7.30pm the mw examined me and said 'one or two pushes and baby will be out'. Due to then being transferred to delivery ward and change of shift with mws, DS arrived at 8.20pm.

I had a relatively quick labour with DC1, DC2 (the induction) was a 1.5 hour labour. I only used a tens for pain relief (and only half as high as with DC1).

With no drip or ARM it was just like a nudge to get labour started, once it did start it just felt pretty normal. It was as if once my body was started off it knew what to do.

Good luck with DC4.

Also can I add that it was nice to not have the car journey-while-contracting. And we were able to have all child care sorted. And DH took the day off work - no rush back for him.

When I asked before the induction, they said first baby inductions were 48-72 hours, subsequent babies 12-24 hours. I found this very reassuring.

yes i had dd spontaneously at 41+1 then induction for ds at 42 wks. i too was utterly dreading it.

it was totally fine. just had pessary. took 12 hours to get things really going, then ds was born 4 hours after first proper contraction. much much easier than my 27 hour back to back labour first time round!

i too liked the fact i could go into hospital all prepared, no rushing. childcare for dd all sorted etc.

while i waited for the pessary to work me and dh toured the hospital, walked round and round stopping at each cafe for a drink and our meals. all very relaxed. didn't have to be hooked upto a monitor laid still in bed as i'd feared.

good luck!

Thanks for all your messages, am 39 weeks today and I think I am in the latent labour phase loads of BHs, pressure, aches and pains so hoping this is a good sign.

I am so hoping it's just like flicking a switch. My first labour was only 4h20m, second 2h30m and the third 1h35m from waters to baby and I didn't even push her out just felt her come down and be expelled IYSWIM? Have only ever had gas and air as well as too fast for anything else.

I keep thinking after all this I am going to have him in the house before I can be induced.

hi, there, please don't worry. i have had 2 natural labours and two inductions. the first induction i was 40+10 and the pessary only started mild contractions, but when i was dilated enough they ruptured membranes which caused bigger but bearable contractions and son was born 3 hours later.
with seconsd bit different as wass 39 weeks and wasnt ready so after pessary and rom was put on sytocin drip, which worked but in my case the lovely midwife forgot to turn drip down when i was established labour so i did need epidural which ended up being good as i could feel pressure of pushing but no pain.
the only thing i don't lilke about induction is the waiting around and being stuck on bed, but as long as baby arrives safely it doesnt really matter. i may also be induced if this baby doesnt come before next week.
good luck to you, hope all goes well

I was induced with DC 3 for similar reasons to you ie fast labours, DH more than an hour away, 2 dc'S at home, previous GBS and a fear of giving birth in my kitchen with only my 4 year old for company.

It was the most wonderful positive experience of my life. I was given GBS antibiotics before induction started, I then had an epidural, my waters were broken, I was given a sweep and then sat around chatting to the midwife for 1.5 hours before feeling pressure to push. My DS was born 2hours 45 mins after my waters were broken.

I had a teeny tear and 4 weeks later feel 100%.
