Big baby predicted - bit scared about the birth!

Hi everyone. I'm 39 weeks + 3 days with my first baby, had a scan today as they thought baby was breach (luckily baby is head down). I mentioned to the sonographer that my bump is quite big (bump size has always been slightly above the highest line on the graph but is following a line) - she asked if I'd had a growth scan and I said no. She took some measurements from the scan and has predicted the current weight of baby to be 8lb 11oz! From the look of horror on my face she did her best to reassure me that bigger babies deliver easier however I am now absolutely petrified! Especially as baby is showing no signs of appearing yet and will get bigger.
Has anyone got any advice or experience on this? Thanks, Sarah

she dropped him sallyj? wow!

my 2nd baby was big (11lb11oz), much much bigger than their estimates (9lb6oz), and came out ok with a very good midwife resolving his shoulder dystocia. we'd rehearsed how to do it if it happened. brush up on that and talk worries through with your midwives if possible. having a big baby was fine for me, and boy could he feed and sleep well.

my fundal height measured 5 weeks ahead in the last 12 weeks of my pregnancy. I was constantly told that the baby was likely to be huge, but the (crap) midwife refused to refer me to anyone or send me for a growth scan.

I was terrified and imagined all sorts of issues like shoulder dystocis or awful tearing. In the end I gave birth a month ago to my first baby, a 9lb 7oz girl. There was also a lot of fluid and apparantly the placenta was enormous - I lost a stone and a half just by giving birth!

Everything went well in the end and I didn't tear at all despite her being 98th percentile for head size.

I was actuslly told that big babies are easier to deliver because they are strong enough to help themselves out, whereas smaller babies can be more passive.

I wouldn't get too worried. I was also told I was breech when I wasn't and that the baby was big, probably close to 10lb, when he was exactly 8lb.

Don't let them scare you. Sometimes I think they do it on purpose. The trick is to relax and keep looking forward to meeting your baby. Congratulations in advance

Big babies are also excellent to handle. Both of mine have been "good" sized (8lb5 and 9lbs), they don't look fragile so you can be a lot more confident with your handling of them, I changed a friend's teeny little girl the other day (she was just a shade over 6lbs) and was terrified I was going to break her.
