CS overhang?

Does everyone end up with an overhang? I am two weeks post section and I still have some swelling and mummy tummy left.

I lost my pg weight last time and my tummy returned pretty much to normal after I resumed my usual running/exercise programme.

Friends keep telling me a CS overhang is unavoidable - is it? Will it make no difference if I diet/exercise?

Nope, not unavoidable. Mine disappeared in the end - although took a while. Can't remember exactly how long. Maybe a 9months to a year before it was completely back to normal.

Most women I know who've had a c-section have some sort of overhang, but not all. I think it depends on how fit you were before hand, how much exercise you do afterwards and the luck of genes.

Thank you!!! I can't help it, I am vain, I accept things change and that I might have an overhang no matter how hard I try if that is just the way my body reacts but I hate the thought that it is just inevitable!

Thank you.

I'm afraid I do have one but I think it was more to do with that fact that I never really bothered to do anything about it after I had my son...

For goodness sake, you only had a baby 2 weeks ago. You shouldn't even be thinking about exercising!

Momdeguerre · 23/04/2010 20:06

Fab - can't help myself! I am a tad fanatical . . .hope to be London marathon ready by this time next year!

Exercise too soon you could do yourself some damage.

Momdeguerre · 23/04/2010 20:41

Never fear, I will be waiting till I am ready, have no desire to set myself back.

I've had 3 sections (youngest just turned 1) and I don't have an overhang. There is a very slight indent along the line of the scar - but it's no way visible in bikini bottoms or even when i'm just in pants. Even with nothing on you can only see it if you look really quite closely. I am not particularly thin (size 10 - 12) and exercise is not high on my priority list although I suppose I am on my feet a lot and walk a lot too (slowly... toddler pace). I think the right exercises probably do help (although do make sure your abdominal muscles have closed before you try any sit ups), but in truth I think it's mainly down to the surgeon and how well they stitched you up. You say you have swelling and mummy tummy (of course - 2 wks post baby), but do you have an overhang? I never did, just an indent where the stitch line was that got less and less noticable as I lost my baby weight and regained muscle tone.

Momdeguerre · 23/04/2010 23:46

I don't think I currently have overhang just a dent - quite deep - the skin below the scar looks a bit bruised but much more bruised and swollen above it and more so at the end of the day than in the morning.

Have been worried the overhang was yet to develop.

Thanks QT. 21 month old toddler is only reason for any current exertions. I usually run 10 k or half marathons and am pretty careful with my post pg training. I had a natural delivery with my eldest DS but a 3rd degree C tear so had to be very careful of my pelvic floor before I returned to running last time.

Promise I am taking it steady!
