Homebirth Question Gas & Air How Much Did You Get through................

morethemerrier · 21/04/2010 17:21

Just asking as I have just had mine delivered, was expecting great big rocket fuel tanks, but have actually received two mickey mouse cannisters?!?

So, I wondered, if you used G&A during a homebirth (or if you know how much you used in hospital), should I be asking if they will have rapid access to more if needed!

My last two births I pretty much coped without, as they kept telling me nothing much was going to happen(both born within 1 1/2 after those comments!)

But, I did welcome the relief when they finally gave me the mouthpiece!

So, as I am planning a HB I want to make sure I don't run out!

Should that be enough?

Hello,
That sounds fine, I had a HB with DS2 and had him in the bath in 2 hours, got through half a canister.
I think one canister can last quite a long time. If in doubt ask the MW to carry some around when you are due. Did you get a box of drugs to put in the fridge aswell? that freaked me out when I had mine! As your previous birth was quick, i would imagine Baby 3 will be also. My third was an hour and a half.
Good luck , hope that helps

herladyshiplovesedward · 21/04/2010 17:41

i had none, but when i was on the bed dh did accidently hit me on the head with the canister when he passed it over to the midwife.. so maybe that was just as effective

morethemerrier · 21/04/2010 17:55

lol herladyship! As if you weren't in enough pain already!

Thanks rmears, was a bit worried that I would turn into that girl off The Exorcist if I ran out!

Have got the Vit K ampoule for baby, but am waiting to hear about wether I have got to get anything else as policy has changed and the midwife seems to think that they will have time to collect it 'en route' if needed!

Hence me getting a bit panicky about the pain relief I have got on hand!

Feel a lot better now!

A useless response to a sensible question.....but I have to chip in on this subject; I have no idea how much I got through except to say it was loads! LOVED IT!

Obviously, I had given up all alcohol & illegal highs when pregnant and so it was such fun to "catch up"

....they had to wrestle the mask away from me....lots of shouts of "you are not even having a contraction...stop it!"...

..and then (which made my husband just shake his head in weary shame)....."you've had the epidural, its definitely working.....you are not allowed any more, put it down!"

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 21/04/2010 18:01

none until I had my stitches and then only enough for her to put the local anaesthetic in.

FannyLogan · 21/04/2010 18:02

I had none - you might find you don't need it so much at home.

The midwives left some synto..... in the fridge a week before in case of PPH I think?

And I bought a bucket. best 99p I spent. Sick in it twice

I barely used mine because it came with a big heavy mouthpiece which I couldn't keep in my mouth unless I held onto it. I found I needed both hands to dig my nails into hold onto DH, so I gave up on it and I was fine without.

morethemerrier · 21/04/2010 19:17

Indaba, can def relate to that!!! With my first I never got the hang of it, had one decent 'suck', and they took it off me as it was time to push!

Thanks fannylogan, will ask about the synto, she only mentioned pethadine which I'm not keen on anyway!

Will get myself a bucket, was sick a couple of times myself which I forgot about, so great tip!

Hoping for another quick labour Loopymumsy, so good to hear your useage fits in with what I have got so far!

Nigglewiggle, I'm hoping it will be user friendly, think I'll be holding onto the G&A though!

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated its my third baby but first HB so just want to be prepared!

Less than a full tank here as well but midwife reassured DH that she could get up to 5 tanks if required.

1st birth (hospital) I took A LOT and he was concerned that I might run out and start killing people. Tis fabulous stuff. If they'd only let you keep a canister at home I'd have found the first few weeks so much less stressful...

Hope the home birth goes well.

mellymooks · 21/04/2010 19:34

I got through both canisters at my homebirth and partner then shot off to local mat. ward to pick up 2 more

morethemerrier · 21/04/2010 19:59

Thanks intravenous!

DH has just mused over the possibility of some left over for him............

Melly, can I ask how long your labour was please? And most importantly, did he get back in time before you ran out/had baby!!!

3.5 and then ran out at my homebirth (first birth)... but was almost 10cm so just got on with the pushing without it and it was fine by then.

mellymooks · 22/04/2010 18:40

morethemerrier it was about 12 hours long and yes thankfully he made it back!

morethemerrier · 22/04/2010 19:02

Thanks melly!

Very pleased to hear he made it back!

Thanks Boobz!

I used the 2 that were left here, then a taxi brought another 2 as I had used them up. I laboured for about 7 hours.

morethemerrier · 22/04/2010 20:01

Oohh, can they do that MrsMills?

Was thinking DH would have to venture out and get extra!

Just noticed that the cannisters are just touching the low end of 'full' on the gauge?!?

I got through 12 .....but I did have a very long labour. And then ended up with an EMCS after transferring. Also the gas and air coming out of the hospital wall was SO much stronger.
