Difference: induction and 'natural' birth (pain!)?- any experiences?..

just a query really. Was reading another thread where someone mentioned inductions being more painful than going into labour 'naturally'.

I was induced at 40 weeks + 3 days with DS (14 months ago) due to high BP, and am pregnant again (due September).
He was eventually delivered with ventouse, as I couldn't push him out, and he was getting distressed.

Obviously, I have no other experience of giving birth.

Am wondering how different it will be if I'm lucky enough that it all goes well this time, and I don't need any form of intervention. Has anyone been induced with DC1 then had 'natural' birth after?

Is it less painful? Was it slower? (have heard inductions can bring things on really quickly and suddenly).

With DS1, it was all very quick. 6 hours from the first contractions that really made me cry out, the last 4 hours of which were in the delivery suite. However, they DID give me pethadine about 7 hours before he was born (a whole other thread- cos really didn't want to have it, but I was on an ante-natal ward, and they didn't realise I'd go into labour so quickly, apparently....), which made me feel quite out of it.

Anyway... not sure what I'm asking really!! Just: WAS induction more painful? how different was the experience, I guess. No real reasons... just wondering!!

thanks

This is all really really interesting and helpful. Thanks so much for all the replies.

Am just crossing fingers now that all goes well and I will have a 'natural' birth this time to compare the first one to.... (am really hoping for one like the people here who say it was completely different to being induced and not so painful... but then I guess we all do!! ).

I guess the advantage of doing it the second time round is that you know what's important to you. The first time, I really didn't know what to expect/ demand/ ask... had no idea at all!! Just did what I was told....

This time round I want to be a little more assertive about what I want. I also want DH to be there so at least one of us can speak up for me and ask awkward questions

(by the way... I do think midwives, in general, are absolutely amazing, superhuman beings! I'd just like a bit more control of the situation next time..)

Just reading this thread with interest as chances are I am going to be induced with my fourth baby in a few weeks.

Have had 3 natural labours, last two were homebirths. Last one was 1h35m from waters to baby.

I get no latent build up of labour, it's like first contraction then the second one straight after, there is no break, DD3 I didn't even push out I just felt her come down and come out in 2 contractions.

I am really hoping with it being my 4th, they will break my waters and kick everything off without the drip, the thought of being strapped to a bed with the synto drip terrifies me.

I was induced first time round with a pessary (and then body took over). Second time round was all natural.
Both were frankly agonising but then I do short sharp labours. Second was probably made worse by a mad dash across London and sheer panic that I wasn't going to make it to hospital rather than attempting to relax!

vanitypear how long were your labours? (I've been posting about the difference between induced and natural labours, but I stupidly put it in the pregnancy thread, and I don't think many people have seen it... this thread seems the better place to post?)

Asking in any event cos had induced first labour 11 hours start to finish, which I thought was quite quick, and wondering how second (hopefully natural!) labour will (note: will - positive language ) be different?

And hello to laittlsilver and thank you again for your replies to my thread in pregnancy section!

Remember reading about an Independent Midwife who said that her first time Mum's had average labours of 7/8 hours whereas those giving birth in hospital had averages of 15 hours plus. Think that says a lot!
