Hi,
I am due on 31st May.My little girl who is now nearly 5 was born by emergency c section after been in labour for over 48 hours ( she was 91b 13 oz ). I have now been given the option of having a planned c section or trying to have this one normally. I have opted for the natural way but don't know if i'm been stupid. I do want to have a natural birth for lots of reasons but then i keep wondering if i'm putting myself through it all for nothing. Has anybody else been in this situation.I'm going to see the consultant again next week. Thanks xx

Why not ask for a growth scan to see if this baby is a similar size before you decide for sure?

Thank you , i am booked in for one of those on 20th April, consultant told me they are not that accurate though so that confused me even more !

if you really want to have a natural labour and birth do all you can to make it what you want, but keep in mind that you may have to have a section for safety reasons.

If the reason why you ended up with a ECS is one that would likely happen again then i think you should talk to a professional again about possible out comes etc
but if it was for a random reason that is unlikely to be repeated and you want a VB then go for it.

Hi,I am also in the same situation.I was in labour for same amount of time and only got to 4cm's.My new baby is due on may 13th and I keep changing my mind about a section. It does worry me that the baby is large (DD was 9lb 5oz) and I've had extra scans but to be honest a big baby does not mean a more diffucult birth or so people tell me!It is more to do with positioning.

I think I need to 'give it a go' otherwise I will think 'what if'?

Such a hard decision to make...

I'm little and had a 7lb baby first time. He was back to back which caused the problems and after 48 hours I only got to 4cm and got EMCS - all very traumatic.

Has a successful VBAC 2 years later with DS2 who was a bit smaller but I'd made sure I'd got him in a good position before I had him (had no idea on importance of position first time round as nobody mentioned it to me). Went into it fully expecting to end up back in theatre but he came out naturally in 7 hours. The difference emotionally, in feeding, bonding and reovery was great.

Just feeding DS3 (8lb) who was born last week - a VBAC waterbirth (no CFM) in 3 hours! Home 4 hours later to put the other kids to bed!!

I'm a big VBAC fan but I know it's a very personal and difficult decision and you have to be mentally prepared that you may end up with another EMCS and you mustn't beat yourself up if that happens.

Thanks everyone, i'm going to go for it, but keep in mind that if i have to nave EMCS then at least i've given it a shot. When the consultant read back through my notes she did say that DD was laid slightly to one side that was what the difficulty was as i'd fully dilated and was pushing for a long time (DD did have a bruise on cheek where i'd been pushing ) Also i am 5'8 so doctors say that is in my favour and there should be no reason why i can't have a 12lb baby if it's laid right ( ouch !!! )

I had EMCS with DD1 and a VBAC with DD2. Admittedly DD1 was only 5lb 12oz and DD2 7lb 3oz - am not sure if a greater weight woud have had an impact on my decision.

I loved my VBAC - just had gas and air, got to hold and feed her for and hour and a half before they did anything. Went home 4 hours after in time for DD1's lunch. Was fab.

Having said that, while I was prepared to do everything I could to aid a VBAC, I did have a very open mind as to what might happen if things didn't go to plan.

Hope all goes well with the consultant.
