I remember the midwife saying that Ds had the cord wraped round his neck (am sure she said a few times) and I vaugely recall them doing 'something' gto free him. He was born haealthy thank god but now I am 19 weeks pregnant with DC2 and have for some reason become obsessively worried about this happening again, maybe with a worse outcome.

Can anyone tell me if this is quite 'common' or is there anything I can do (private scan??) near to the birth to check out if this baby will have the same problem.

thanks

Cord round neck is VERY common - around half of all births according to my mw. There is plenty time between the head emerging and the body following to pull it over.

Talk it over with your mw.

As a midwife I find that very many babies have the cord wrapped round the neck and it really isn't a major problem. Your DS was absolutely fine so try not to worry about it. We either deliver the baby through the loop of the cord, slip it over the baby's head or unwrap it from round the neck when the baby is out.

Thanks to you both for the replies.
I made the fatal mistake of googling it and saw that in some cases it is thought that the baby asphyxiates. if it is such a common occurence there must be more to it than that though. Will definately talk to MW about it.

NEVER google medical problems!
The worst case scenario always appears first.
Seriously, the number of people I know who have given birth with the cord round the neck is huge. And all the babies were fine.
