Post-birth tea and toast

Just a thread to appreciate the finest meal you'll ever eat...

Half an hour after giving birth, feeling all euphoric and legs finally stopped shaking, just us and our new daughter...midwife brought in a plate of triangularly-cut hot thick buttery toast each for me and DP and a hot sugary cuppa.
It was the best thing EVER. I hadn't eaten since the start of established labour 8 hours earlier and I wolfed it down.

Think they did it for everyone, in fact, may even have been hospital policy?!
Anyone else get given similar?

Oh yes! With all 3 dc's. Was DELICIOUS.
Infact I had 2 lots with ds2

MrsKitty · 02/04/2010 10:24

Think it's a fairly universal think, although am at your hot thick buttery toast, as mine was vile bendy, thin, cold, value bread toast with 'spread' and weak tinny tasting tea .

MrsKitty · 02/04/2010 10:25

First sentence should read "It's a fairly universal thing, I think"

frumpygrumpy · 02/04/2010 10:27

Yeah, I got this.......also thin, cold, rubbery, and dishwater tea. I was so looking forward to the hot, buttery wedge and builders tea...........

heth1980 · 02/04/2010 18:08

Yes. That cup of tea was the loveliest most delicious I have ever tasted!!

StealthPolarBear · 02/04/2010 18:09

didn't get one with DS
Had one with DD though - was OK

muggglewump · 02/04/2010 18:10

Exdp ate mine-knobhead

VengefulKitty · 02/04/2010 18:14

I loved the tea, but really was not hungry and didn't want the toast. I was forced to eat it though even though I was staying overnight as when my waters broke there was meconium present.

MillyMollyMoo · 02/04/2010 18:14

I bet you still ate it thought MrsKitty

8 hours without food though, that's a worry did nobody offer you anything during labour ? you need to eat to keep your strength up.

stressheaderic · 02/04/2010 18:28

We didn't think it would be that long really. I came in at 7am, examined at 8am, told I was 7cm, had a banana and an apple (whilst in the bath) then went to my delivery room, as they thought she'd be born by lunchtime. Things went a bit awkward though as time progressed (contractions stopped, needed syntocin, she got stuck) so she didn't arrive until 6pm....by which time I could have eaten a scabby cat!

Not wanting to be competitive, but it tastes pretty bloody spectacular after 30 hours without food

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 02/04/2010 19:22

I was a bit miffed as with DD, mine came just when I had managed to get her latched on for her first-ever feed. So I had to wait until she'd finished, by which time the toast was pretty cold and dry (luckily the tea was still mostly OK)!
Later a lovely MW brought me a bowl of Frosties and some cheese and crackers at 10pm as I was still hungry

Didn't get anything like that with DS though, as he was a section so I had to beg just to get some water afterwards... after more than 24 hours without food!

posieparker · 02/04/2010 19:25

Oh that cup of tea is like the most amazing liquid known to man, and I'm not really a tea drinker, unless I can dunk!!

My DH also brought in a sandwich filled with olives, pate, anchovy fillets, goats cheese and rocket with a dollop of onion marmalade...all swilled down with lactolose(c-section!!).

foreverastudent · 02/04/2010 20:07

I actually really resented being harassed into having tea and toast after delivery.

I'm sorry but after being awake for more than 24 hours I want to be left alone to sleep NOT * caffeine!

Oh, and some white bread to play havoc with my blood sugar levels, yeah.

I was made to feel like some kind of freak for not wanting 'my' tea and toast which is not how I expect to be treated by 'professionals'.

It was one of the reasons I wanted a home birth the next time.

Spottyshoes · 02/04/2010 20:12

Cant say I was too fussed about it but did only have a 4.5 hr labour. Did however manage to eat all 4 slices pretty quickly. It was only weeks later DH told me 2 of them had been for him

BertieBottsChocolateBeans · 02/04/2010 20:12

I just got orange juice and soggy cornflakes Was starving but wanted to sleep more I think at that point. Luckily DS was tired from the birth too!

rubyslippers · 02/04/2010 20:14

i have said it before, and i will say it again the post birth tea and toast i have had with both DCs is like nectar from the gods ...

seriously

rubyslippers · 02/04/2010 20:15

actually, the entire bar of green and blacks almond chocolate i ate post birth with DD was even better

Fel1x · 02/04/2010 20:17

With DS1 I had one bite and threw up all over the place.
Did NOT have any with DS2

It's the best cuppa in the world - my only complaint after ds2 was born was that the tea took too long to arrive - I wanted it before the placenta was delivered!

hazeyjane · 02/04/2010 20:21

Ugh, I had a slice of cheap wholemeal after dd1 (3 day labour) with nothing on it - NOTHING! - not even marge. Fortunately dh had made an entire loaf into jam sandwiches when labour started, so we would have been able to survive on those for a long, long time.

The cup of tea was the finest known to man though. I used to have my tea weak with no sugar, but ever since various hospital stays I have become addicted to strong sugary tea.

I get very excited about having cornflakes in hospital - it is the only place I ever have them.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/04/2010 20:23

I got horrible thin bread with a tiny scraping of marg, but my god was it the most amazing thing ever. Also got cornflakes which was nice.

sheilatakeabow · 02/04/2010 20:25

I got jam on mine. Almost made up for having to give birth with nothing more than a hospital corned beef and onion (onion??!!! wtf?) sandwich (no butter) to sustain me

Maveta · 02/04/2010 20:28

no, am in spain so they wouldn´t even think of offering these items. mum and dad visited in hospital and thinking to spoil me brought in loads of favourite junky food i.e. scotch eggs, cured sausage etc that i really wasn´t in the mood for at all.
