If the scan says boy and then a girl is born...

...then what made the sonographer think the baby was male?

I know gender scans aren't 100% accurate, and I can understand how tiny boy bits might be missed in a scan leading to someone thinking they are having a girl when in fact it's a boy.

But how can they make the mistake the other way round? The sonographer must have seen something on the baby to make them think that it is male. Would this be because that area isn't fully formed at the time of the scan? Poor quality images? Some sort of swelling that is absorbed back into the body ?

Anybody had this happen? Anybody know why?

maybe the cord was inbetween legs making it look like a little willy, this is one thing I'm dreading.....I have been told I'm having a boy and it will not be funny if a little girl pops out!!!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 29/03/2010 20:56

When my sister was born, my father was first told she was a boy - that was in 1960. I guess someone mistook the umbilical cord?

posieparker · 29/03/2010 20:59

At the kind of gestation a baby girl's labia, on ultrasound, can appear similar to what a layperson might assume a baby boy's testicles looks like.

TinaSparkles · 29/03/2010 20:59

DH took one look at our baby at delivery and announced it as a boy before passing to me.

He was definitely a she!

I guess the umbilical cord can be easily mistaken for a willy.

What a dafty though!

DinahRod · 29/03/2010 21:00

I believe they look for testicles which are quite round and large on little boys!

SoupDragon · 29/03/2010 21:01

What Posie said.

Why won't it be funny if a girl pops out?? Do you plan on sending her back?

DinahRod · 29/03/2010 21:01

Dh announced no 2 was "another boy" and senior mw said, "I think you ought to look again"

Alicetheinvisible · 29/03/2010 21:04

We had our 20 week scan on friday and we are having a boy. The sonographer showed us exactly what they look for and it is definitely a boy. It is all anatomically correct, just small iyswim?

HoopsAndBelly · 29/03/2010 21:39

SoupDragon cause she'll be wearing all blue for the first few days of her life and of course I won't be sending her back........

Clitorises can be large and not so easily distinguished from a penis.

tostaky · 30/03/2010 05:41

i think girls genitals are swollen at birth because of the hormones during labour or something - might explain the confusion at birth.
No idea why though during the scan

Alicetheinvisible · 30/03/2010 10:46

DH (vet) said if they get it wrong it would be when they couldn't get a full view iyswim? There was obviously testicles and a willy there on our scan, but baby was very co-operative and sat there with his legs open for ages

MumNWLondon · 01/04/2010 16:00

When was the scan done? When I asked at 14 weeks sonographer said not prepared to look as before 16-18 weeks both genders had bits that stick out just the angle was different and it was hard to tell.
