Any advice - turning baby at 31 weeks because of risk of premature labour

Hi there, hoping that someone may have some helpful advice on this.

Had a major scare on Monday night with a massive bleed at 30 weeks (gush then running down legs). Went to hosptial and it seemed to calm down but with regularish tightenings without pain although uncomfortable (have been having these for a couple of weeks). Had 2 sets of the steriod injections to develop the baby's lungs. By the next night, the tightening now were with achy period pains and coming at least 3 times ever 10 mins so was transferred back to the delivery suite. Cervix had shortened to 1.5cm but wasn't thining. Baby was happy and not distressed :-D but was in a breech position. We were told that it could go either way, they just didn't know, but as they didn't have a lot of practice with breech premmies they were advising a c-section if I did go into full labour.

Luckily everything calmed down again and whilst they still don't know what caused the bleed, my consultant thinks that I have an irritable uterus which just likes to contract. I spent 3 days in the hosptial and have been advised to take next week off and take it easy (not complete bed rest due to risk of clots).

After all that, am still hoping to go full term (as it's still possible) but want to be prepared in case it doesn't pan out that way. If I do have a premmie then I'd like to be in the best of health afterwards so would prefer not to have a c-section if I can do anything about it (of course if it needs to be for the baby's safety then that's fine).

Have turned 31 weeks today and I was wondering was whether anyone knows of any positions or things that I can do that can move the baby into a better position but won't promote labour positions (if that makes sense). I've had a look online but they all seem to be for positions close to due date and I don't want to try one and find out that it's placing pressure or helping open up the cervix.

Any advice will be really gratefully received.

Thanks!!

I had a baby at 30 weeks (oct 2009) - he is sleeping next to me at the moment and is very healthy - i would personally just let your body rest and recover. When i went into labour he was transverse then breach then he turned to the right postion himself - all in 4 hours. i am not saying this will happen to you but it can happen and often does. Wihoout wishing to frighten you; it will not be you and a midwife. I had 10 other people in the room - doctors, midwives and nurses. And mine was consider a normal birth but very early -his heartrate was fine and he came out screaming. Babies are much smaller at this age i hope i have not worried you and have provided some comfort. if you have further questions about his birth or what happens after, just ask. i will check back.

EldonAve - thanks so much for the link, that's really helpful!!

Mrspear - that's great to know and congrats on your little boy! It's definitely a comfort to know what you can have a normal birth albeit an early one. Whilst a natural birth would be the dream... the baby being safe is the most important thing so would be happy to have as many people around to make it as safe as possible.

Will definitely take your advice about resting. I think I just felt so out of control this week that I just wanted to feel that I could do something and do something positive - am a slight control freak...

You haven't worried me and in fact have made me feel a lot better about it all.

Thanks again for all the support, it means a lto me!
