6 week check-wot they should do?

I went for my six week check yesterday & it was not what I expected.

I dont have a lot of faith im my doctor so could someone let me know what he should have "checked"?

I got a c-section and he never even looked at my scar, the only thing he done was check my blood pressure & give me the pill.

Did he check what he was meant too? or should he have checked anything else?

I was expecting a vaginal examination of some sort as I did dilate to 9 centimeters before my section and thought he should have atleast looked at my scar??

any advice?

STIGZ · 17/03/2010 22:07

sounds about right.........mine asked me if I wanted him to look at my stitches (i.e whip my knickers off) to which I said 'no thank you'. He took my BP and gave me a prescription for the pill. If you want your scar looking at there's nothing to stop you making an appointment and going back.

first DC - Dr and I had a nice chat, he asked if I needed any help with BF and asked the obligatory laughable contraception question.
2nd DC - Drs surgery rang to say would I like to make an appt and I said I didn't see the point really and all was fine.

My Gp wasn't really that interested in me at the 6 week check, no BP taken or anything. He was more interested in playing with DS and checking him over.

I was surprised they didn't do more tbh..

alannabanana · 19/03/2010 22:32

stigz - your doctor is defo crap coz your not supposed to even take the pill until 6 months after birth! dunno what book he was looking at!
my surgery didnt do anything with me, just examined DS. i think if you've had a c-section they are supposed to look at your tummy at 6 weeks though.

BexJ78 · 19/03/2010 22:36

Alannabanana, my doc prescribed the pill for me at my 6/8 week check! Why aren't they suppose to prescribe it? eek!

mollybob · 19/03/2010 22:42

no reason at all about not taking the pill at 6 weeks if not breast feeding alannabanana - you're misinformed. No need to look at a scar unless there's a problem - I think there's more than enough whipping knickers off during pregnancy without unnecessary examinations afterwards. Doctors used to insist on doing vaginal examinations in all 6 weeks to give women permission to have sex again
It's all about checking BP, discussing contraception and looking out for any signs of postnatal depression as well as looking at anything specific that the Mum is concerned about in terms of recovery from the birth especially breasts, scars, bleeding etc.

legscrossed · 19/03/2010 22:47

mine just asked me how my mood was!?
was expecting fanny inspection but none.
Was c sec no labour
quick LOOK at scar

you can take the pill if you are breastfeeding too!
many people prefer not to becasue of possible effects of the hormones on their baby, and some forms of the pill can affect milk supply

but there are certainly some that are fine with breastfeeding. normally progestin-only ones which are less likely to interfere with milk supply

if you want a progestin and oestrogen pill then that's normally not advised until your baby is around 6 momnths old in case of a drop in supply

BexJ78 · 19/03/2010 22:55

yes, I am breastfeeding and my doctor said that i could take the mini-pill...

alannabanana · 20/03/2010 10:42

oh dear..well my doc defo said 6 months until it was safe to take the pill again - breastfeeding or no. he is old though - maybe thats some old school rule or something. its a shame because you place your trust in these people to keep you healthy, and they can't even agree on the simplist things.
silly doctors.

mollybob · 20/03/2010 14:46

alanna - not "silly doctors" - some perfectly sane ones and some that are plan wrong
