Anyone live near Cardiff?

Im due to go to a close friends wedding (DH is the best man) in Cardiff soon when im 37 weeks. We will be there for a long weekend.

I shall be taking my hopsital bag and notes on the off chance but wondered if there any preference of local hospitals, Just in case!

I don't live there any more, but I was born in Heath Hospital in Cardiff! Hope someone else comes along for you X

The University Hospital of Wales is the biggest and most central (also known as Heath Hospital). They have MLU there and consultant lead unit which is very brand spanking new.
Telephone number 02920747747.
Hope this helps.

isn't Llandough (pronounced lan - dock) Hospital the maternity one?

dontstopmenow · 10/03/2010 13:06

They have a big maternity unit too but it is further out of the centre so was assuming central best. But indeed, there is a unit there too.
Lets just hope pigley doesn't need it anyway and gets home with bump intact!

pigleychez · 10/03/2010 13:26

Thanks ladies...

Yes fingers crossed bump will stay put! DD was induced at 42 weeks so im guessing so, just depends how akward it wants to be!

We are staying in st Fagans. (means nothing to me! The bride has arranged our accomodation)

Are the hospitals any good.. ie any horror stories? peferences in which one you would choose?
Not that id have much choice in that situation!
Having the telephone number is very handy... saves any faffing trying to find it out!

don'tstop - wasn't sure, i grew up in Llandough and didn't know if it was still there - i left in 1996!

From St Fagan's either hospital would be equi-distance if memory serves me correctly. We used to go the St Fagan's museum on school trips and it only took about 15 mins on a coach.

Katz · 10/03/2010 16:56

in fact i'd say Llandough would be the easiest option, depending on time of day as you'd just drop onto the A4243 and go over the fly-over to Llandough.

barkfox · 10/03/2010 18:14

pigleychez, you are very handily placed for either Llandough or the Heath (UHW), you will be glad to know. Katz is right, Llandough would prob be a bit easier, but you could chuck a stone and hit either from St Fagans! The Heath is only 4 miles max from Llandough in any case.

The Heath is very big, and has both midwife and consultant led units, whereas Llandough is a lot smaller and is midwife led only, I believe. I guess it depends what your preferences are/what sort of birth you are expecting.

The drfoster website might help you compare if you want more info -

I'm afraid the only thing I can tell you from experience is that parking is a total bugger at both hospitals. Not sure how helpful that is....

Hi
I had a baby in Llandough two years ago in the birth unit - it was fabulous!

My own huge room for three days , O/H allowed to stay overnight, double bed, tv ,ensuite facilities, sofa for guests etc. It was like a bedroom in a travel lodge

Staff were fabulous, I was looked after well and had visit from physio to talk through post baby exercises!

I'd say go for Llandough.
