I gave birth to DD1 6 weeks ago 8lb 3 she was a planned homebirth but went to hosp as labour prolonged. At the hospital (luckily) I had a PPH of 1600ml from where the placenta attaches and had a blood transfusion a couple of days later as i was v weak.

I am really worried about having the same problem again if i decide to have another baby. I spoke to my GP today and she says given my first PPH was placental i am 3x more likely to have a PPH on subsequent births than the average woman. I was wondering if they would let me have a c/s for a second baby and if this would help with the bleeding? (i figure its easier to stop it if there in there already).

has anyone been in the same situation?

Hi I had PPH due to large placental site after the delivery of my ds1 and had a blood transfusion afterwards. I had a lovely normal birth with my 2nd (9lb 14oz). I had a venflon in during labour and was given a syntocin drip aferwards to control any bleeding. I've had 2 more normal births since with no pph.(DS4 now 7weeks old) When you are pregnant again it is likely you will be referred to consultant care as PPH is a criteria for referral and then you can discuss your options. Enjoy your little one

Thanks everyone, Loopymumsy- i should have mentioned i already had a venflon in, was on an oxtocin drip, had been given a litre of fluids prior to delivery and they had all the injections drawn up ready prior to delivery as the midwife had 'a feeling' i might bleed due to my red hair and having bled quite a lot after my tonsillectomy a few years before. Really greatful to the midwife as i'm sure the bleeding would have been much worse if they'd had to take the time to put a cannula in and draw up drugs etc.

I'm not sure a CS would actually be a much better option, sorry to say. I lost a lot of blood during my CS as they accidently cut through things they weren't supposed to have done and then couldn't figure out what they had cut.

I had a previous c section where I lost 3500ml- which was internal bleeding an hour after the op. I was very ill and bedbound for 3 days on drains etc. I had an elective with the next one (didn't want one but had already had 2 so had no choice) and was scared to death of it happening again but luckily I only lost a normal amount (1000ml for a section). PPH doesn't always happen again and if they know you have had it once, they get blood etc ready and I had a senior consultant do it.

I have had previous normal births and they were so much easier. C sections carry more risks of PPH as far as I know.

I am booked for an elective following a retained placenta and PPH (both during birth and another one month after). Had to push for it though, as it's not the stardard procedure and it's not being done on medicial ground - it's being done on "psychological" grounds if you see what I mean.....don't want to star in "all creatures great and small" again and then lie in bed for 2 months unable to move (as I didn't want a blood transfusion).
