Booked in for an induction ......... am i doing the right thing?

I am booked in for induction on saturday although will only be 12 days overdue. I asked to be induced then as have a history of big babies (9 - 11 lb) in my family and mum and sister have both had very difficult births due to this. However, i am now wondering if i have been too hasty and should hold out a bit longer to see if labour comes naturally as there can be complications with inductions and other threads have said they can be a lot more difficult and traumatic.

Any advice?

do they think your baby is big?
have you had a scan to check for size?

It's standard around here to induce at 10 days overdue anyway.
I don't think there's a right answer to your question. I would probably wait longer if I were in your shoes, but I think it's perfectly reasonable for others to choose to do different.

Good luck, whatever happens!!

They have not said baby big and measured belly at normal size but same was said to sister and her baby was over 10 lb.

I was induced at 10 days overdue with both DS.They were 9lbs 7oz and 10lbs 11oz.No indications on scans of them being big babies.I couldn't wait to be induced as there was no room at the inn-felt like I was going to pop! First induction was O.K.Progressed overnight, and delivered naturally with no stitches at 9.30am.Second induction was instantaneous-BOOM.Straight away strong painful contractions, delivered naturally again after about 3 or 4 hours. No stitches again thank goodness.Big babies can be long thin babies-as my first was,or just massive whoppers like my second.Try to stay upright when delivering, and don't push when crowning.

I know people who've had straightforward (enough) births with babies up to 12 lbs . I've always heard that presentation matters more than size itself; so a 6lber can be a bitch to birth if he presents wrong.

I guess you don't know what your body can do if you don't try.

I agree about standing position as best position to deliver, btw, but that will be harder to do the more interventions you have (which is more likely when one is induced than if spontaneous).

Sorry, don't mean to confuse you, there is no one right answer, just have to go with what feels like the best bet on the day!
