VBAC after (complete) Failure To Progress while induced 1st time round.

First time round: waters broke, no contractions, so induced for 12hours with sytoncin drip. I think I dilated to 2cm (wowie!) so had ECS.

I used hypnobirthing techniques so didn't have any pain relief while being induced and was generally very calm, and the C-section was good. All fine.

Second time round: I would like to VBAC but not sure it's going to work out. I have started re-reading the HB book and listening to the scripts BUT a little piece of me is saying 'yeah yeah like that worked last time'.

Not sure really what to do. I want to have a VBAC - has anyone managed it in same circumstances and are there any good links. I have just found these: www.aims.org.uk/ and www.homebirth.org.uk/vbchances.htm#reason

Any training doulas out there? I am in south london and will be at St Thomas'.

I am sure 12 hours on drip wasn't particularly pleasant but maybe wasn't long enough, esp if your body wasn't ready when the induction started?

I'd sure you'll get lots people telling you that after 12 hours of labour with first baby they were hardly dilated. I had contractions from 10pm, went to hospital at 7am after contractions every 5-10 mins all night and only 1cm dilated. DD was born 5 hours later, but I was very demotivated to hear about the poor progress, and refused all internal checks 2nd timearound. Internal checks might be a good idea if baby is distressed and hence need to deliver (and hence know how advanced you are) but otherwise I am not so sure.

Why were you induced? It could all be very different if you go into labour naturally.

Try also membrane sweep and or acupuncture after your due date.

I was induced as my waters broke on Wednesday, and I had 48 hours for labour to start, before being induced.

I took myself to hospital [naive emoticon] on the Friday evening and they started induction at l2am or something mad. So had the C section Saturday afternoon. I could feel that ds hadn't moved down so it was all a bit pointless really, but I didn't know enough to challenge it.

I have heard about women taking antibiotics after waters broken but labour hasn't started but that wasn't mentioned.

hummmm......acupuncture - now that might have helped - something to look into.

I have heard of sucess stories with several "alternative" therapies - accupuncture, aromartherapy and reflexology. A friend (qualified nurse so not too hippy dippy!) got her daughter's labour going with aromatherapy oils both in a massage oil and in the bath. I have spoken to my accupuncturist about it and she said that all these therapies work well PROVIDING the baby and Mum's body is naturally ready to go. She said that people try without understanding this and then say that it did not work! Alternative therapies work with the body not against it and gives some idea of how powerful drugs used to induce must be.
I do not know if homeopathy can help with inducing but I am a big fan as it has helped me dealing with bladder problems after a botched catherisation.

i agree with mumnwlondon

12 hours isn't that long really. plus you're trying to force your body to do something it isn't quite ready to do so I think a lot of times it is more difficult.

going into labour naturally is a whole different kettle of fish

ZombiePlanB · 01/03/2010 19:04

so basically the induction wasn't ever going to work. I think I knew that at the time but thought 'oh they must know best'.

So if PROM (premature rupture of membranes) happens again, then does anyone have any advice? I could just not tell the hospital. Or ask to be put on anti bios?

ive got the same problem as you and im due in 4 weeks... hoping for labour to start on its own...

moaningminniewhingesagain · 01/03/2010 22:58

I had PROM first time round and was going to be induced about 3 days later but needed a crash CS for severe distress ('fetal compromise' - except she was fine once out)before they could start the drip.

Went for VBAC next time (HBAC strictly speaking) but had CS for failure to progress this time, labour started spontaneously. Was ok though, and bloods showed borderline distress for him too so it was right to get him out. Much easier to labour when your waters aren't broken I found.

I just went with the flow, planned to have baby at home if went well, transfer in and have a CS if not going right - and that's what I did. I did have a very firm birth plan though and had to reiterate things - I would not accept epidural/having waters broken/any hormones to speed up labour at all. Just a CS under spinal. Had a very supportive midwife for the home stage though, crappy one at the hospital.

Lulumaam · 02/03/2010 08:58

i had my waters broken in my first birth at 39 +1, then the drip, after several hours, i had had diamorphine and epidural, and ended up with c.s as no progress, i was 2 - 3cm. i had the epidural too early and was immobile for teh whole labour

i had been induced due to bleeding

second time around, i went into labour spontaneously and delviered vaginally, with no complications on my due date.

i was active and upright for as long as i could manage! i did have CFM but was encouraged to be off the bed and moving

i am a doula, but not in your neck of the woods, sadly !

mnistooaddictive · 02/03/2010 09:08

Are you me? I had emcs after failure to progress. I was 3cm dilated fror 12 hours. Secomd time around I had VBAC and progressed normally. Don't give up hope it does happen!

ZombiePlanB · 03/03/2010 11:16

thanks all! I just don't know. I want to wait to see what happens but I like to be prepared so am trying to work out what will help me not have another Csection. It was fine first time round but Csection with a Very active toddler = hell.

Maybe I should insist on a HBAC. I am five mins drive from St Thomas' so I wouldn't be too worried about complications.

I might find out about doulas in the area and how much they'd cost.
