Anyone been induced twice?

Hi All,

I'm 3 days overdue and have spent the afternoon being re-scanned and monitored due to a slowing of fetal movements. I'm back in tomorrow to be re-monitored but booked in to be induced Saturday morning where I'll be 5 days overdue. Unfortunatly my cervix isn't ready so it looks like I'll have to go through induction all over again.
With DC1 I was induced at 10 days over (waters went over 24 hrs previously) - and to be honest, it was hell - no breaks in between contractions and I only lasted 2 hours before an epidural.

So am looking for experiences 2nd time round - am dreading it but I know it's best for the sake of my baby. Thanks in advance.....

Yes, induced with both of mine. I was bloody terrified second time around as I was induced with first(because, like you, waters went and then nothing happened) and had a pretty similar experience to you by the sound of it.

But I hope I can reassure you as second time (just because of being 9 days over EDD) was brilliant. A really positive birth experience. They gave me the pessary at 9am, DD was born less than 6 hours later, with just gas and air.

I think part of the difference was that the induction was allowed to start off more gradually with the gel (as opposed to them sticking the hormone drip in and cranking it up to 12!). Also helped that I was mobile throughout second time. And that DS had paved the way, as it were .

Hope all goes well, Bean.

Thank you Weasel.... that has made me feel a whole lot better! I am terrified and was aiming to get the anaethesist in there the moment it kicked off but fingers crossed it will be similar to yours!!

I have had 4 inductions.

They have all been different, the last one was wonderful coped fine on just gas & air and straight away that I would do that again tomorrow!

The pushing bit was much much much much quicker with all the subsequent ones.

susiey · 25/02/2010 20:46

I've had 2 inductions and the second one was so much better and quicker

with my daughter (DC1)it took ages and was very painful and I spent a whole hour pushing.
with my son(DC2)Once my labour was established with my son it was 6 hours start to finish and was 3 pushes and out it was so much easier

doodlexyz · 25/02/2010 20:51

Another here who has had 2 inductions. First was awful, and like you didn't last more than a couple of hours before screaming for the epidural!!

Second induction couldn't have been more different, my induction was started off at about 10.30am and by 5.30pm with only gas and air, I had my beautiful baby

So I would definitely say my second was easier, so hopefully it'll will be the same for you.

yellowcircle · 25/02/2010 20:55

Yes, I've had 2 inductions. My first was fine because I had an epidural. My second induction was quickish but monstrously painful - I was desperate for an epidural and out of my mind in agony but as they had not bothered looking after me, DD arrived before the epidural. Don't be put off by my post - my problems arose due to a major staff shortage in a crap hospital. Put on your birth plan you want an epidural so that it is there as an option if you need it - it's not compulsory, but it's available.

mormor · 25/02/2010 21:00

I have been induced twice. First was unpleasant and second was over in a flash. I had about 1.5 hours from when the contractions got serious until the birth. I had the pill about 11am and the baby at 1pm. It was me, one mid wife and my husband. Just gas and air and NO tearing. I was doing mental victory laps after that. Good luck. Hope yours is the same.

Arcadie · 25/02/2010 22:41

My experience was very similar to Weasel's. 1st induction with drip and the works. 2nd with just a pessary and then pretty much a natural labour with the pool and gas&air. Much lovelier experience all round. Inductions don't have to be awful Promise

alannabanana · 25/02/2010 23:17

what a reassuring thread, thanks for creating it OP, and for posting all posters. i was induced 1st time round - hated it. the thought of it happening again with DS2 (now 23 weeks) was shitting me up i have to say - ive been more set than ever on a nice natural water birth - but after reading these i feel like it wouldnt be the end of the world if it happens again, and by the sounds of things it'll all happen much faster - great!

Beanigan · 26/02/2010 09:07

Yes agree with alanna's comments - thank you all so much. I'll definitely let you all know what actually happens. I have already informed them that if it is a repeat performance I'll be requesting an epidural.

I do want a water birth (always have)so I'll ask them if I'd be allowed if all goes smoothly. I've always been low risk in this pregnancy but now they've shifted me up a risk I'm not so sure....

Thanks again (by the way I'm not sure how I managed to post the OP twice!)

Ive had 2 inductions.
1st was awful. 2nd was a breeze.

MathsMadMummy · 26/02/2010 09:21

I was induced with DD because of low amniotic fluid, it was really really awful. So I was terrified with DS when I was overdue and had to be induced (cue floods of tears!).

But it was so much better. Your body responds much more quickly; this time I had my waters broken artificially, but didn't have the syntocinon drip and didn't have an epidural. It was a very good experience all in all.

I think that was partly because I was at a different hospital with better staff though.

psychomum5 · 26/02/2010 09:30

I have been induced 4 times!!

first birth was spontanious
second was induced. One lot of gel at 9.30pm, gave birth at 4.19am......really easy, and no more painful than my first, fully 'normal' birth.
third, induced again, but needed 3 lots of gel as I was unable to walk and get things going.....I had fallen and split my pelvis first lot of gel 6am, then 12 noon, then 6pm, then I started to contract and baby was born at 12.31am.
fourth, again induced, this time due to having broken ribs in a car accident at 28weeks and by 36wks they were not healing.....bump got in the way. Induction was one lot of gel at about 9pm-ish, had baby at 9.51am following morning.
fifth, induced at 38wks, (very bad pregnancy and I was ill), gel in at 9pm-ish, baby born at 5.49am.

I have to say, none of my induced labours were any more painful than my un-induced labour and birth, and in fact, the pushing stage was quicker and easier. Mind you, pushing was probably easier because I had done it before and body 'knew' what it was doing.

good luck, and please don;t panic. You have already been through labour and birth once, so your body has had experience, and most of the time, second labours are easier because of this.

EarthMotherImNot · 26/02/2010 09:38

I've been induced for all 3 of my deliveries.

I have no idea what spontaneous labour is like but each induction was relatively easy, longest being 6 hours, shortest 2 hours.

My second induction was the 2 hour one

lostinwales · 26/02/2010 09:40

Induce all three times now, first one slow to get going, with no two I had one pessary, waters broken and went from noting to holding baby in 45 mins . It was awesome! When I turned back up on the ward holding my lovely boy two hours after I'd left they were gobsmacked, and I'd had time for a bath and a cup of tea. I'd do it again tomorrow, good luck.

mosschops30 · 26/02/2010 09:46

Im sorry but I have nothing good to say about my 2nd induction, it was dreadful.
However my first induction was fantastic and I got through it with a bit of pethidine and some G&A so its hard to say.
Like any labour it will just go its own way and your previous labour will have no bearing on your next

crumpette · 26/02/2010 09:50

Induced both times. With DD I had the gel on my cervix, it was reasonably fast (very fast at the end) but endless contractions and I was screaming like a lunatic for an epidural or a c-section or a shotgun

With DS I had a pessary put up there which is slow release prostaglandin and is supposed to stay behind your cervix for 24 hours. It was a lot faster than that, cx started within 3 hours and it seemed to be slightly less horrendous than the first time, probably because it wasn't one dose all at once but was releasing it slowly. All over in a few hours but not v painful until the very end. Left hospital within 2 hours

Good luck!

popcal · 26/02/2010 09:52

Induced all 4 times!
1st Trem+5 1 pessary and drip due to bleeding (5hrs)
2nd Term+9 ARM only 3hrs
3rd Term 3xpessaries then 2hr labour
4th Term 2x pessary 3.5hr labour.
After the first all easy labours with very quick 2nd stage and only needed gas and air. Good luck!

Comfy · 26/02/2010 09:56

I have had two induced labours and they were very similar. Pessaries moring and then evening, mild contractions over night, not much more progress, drip and epidural then birth some time later.
1st took about another 12 hours after that.
2nd was quicker but baby's heartbeat slowed dramatically at the end and I had to have an episiotomy.
Good luck.

Beanigan · 04/03/2010 17:04

Hi All - well here was the result.....

5 days of induction - 3 pessaries later - nothing happened. ARM - nothing happened.... Sento drip - from 3ml, 6ml, 12ml, 24ml, 48ml then 60ml per hour - for 2 hours - FINALLY - it kicked off.

I did book in an epidural for when it kicked off - but unfortunately I was cheated out of one (!) as the Aneathisist was called into surgery. Well, as expected, when contractions had started - it was full on. I just about survived on Gas and Air (they were good at managing the drip to ensure I got a wee break in between contractions). 3 hours later, 10 mins pushing and by DD was born - all 8lb 1oz of her!

So in all, the induction was very painful but very very quick. Only 1st degree tear, one stitch and recovering very well!! Thanks to everyone for their stories.
x
