Sent to hospital 5 days overdue with high blood pressure?

I'm posting on behalf of my sister-in-law who has just had a midwife appointment and been told her blood pressure is very high and she should head straight to the hospital.

She was due last Thursday.

Does anyone has an experiance of what is likely to happen in this situation? We are all on edge not sure whether to go over there or to wait or what is likely to happen. I know she would prefer not to have to be induced but I thought that probably would in this situation, does anyone know?

Yes I have direct experience. They will put her on blood pressure drugs to stop the bp climbing and will try to induce. The induction may or may not work-if it doesnt they will pressurise her into having a c-section. The whole process could take days.

Does she actually want people going over to the hospital? Personally i'd be pretty pissed off with people coming to visit me while an induction was going on-especially if I was having prostin pains

Oh no, it's perfectly alright. I had my OH's whole family come INTO the labour room while I was 6cm dilated and huffing on gas and air.

She wants to know everyone is there for her. I have expressed my concern about this on a number of occasions, but she is adament she wants everyone there like they were there for me.

I won't be able to go unless I can find a baby sitter at this sort notice anyway.

So you think they will induce her? She's been getting pains for a while, I know the last things she wants is a c-section, she doesn't even want any drugs (personally I think thats a bit crazy, noone told me I could have the gas and air until I was 5cms or I would have had it as soon as I got there)

I had this - I fought off induction for a week but by then I so hated being in hospital they could have done anything to me...ended up having failed induction and e-cs (which I will regret to my dying day). I was medicated for my BP which was very high - it was something over a 103 - although that was staright after a sweep and never went that high again..anyway tell her to fight for anything she doesn't want...but ultimately dd3 is quite cute and arrived safely

BTW I had my 2 children with high bp and no medication and no hospital stay and drug free hands off birth (but my blood pressure was mearly into the 90s)

Eeek, I didn't realise that inductions had a high fail rate. I went into labour naturally but had to have oxytocin at the last few pushes because I couldn't get the baby out, it was either that or a c-section. I'm glad I had it but boy, where they some strong contractions that my son came out with.

I've been induced twice for high bp which led to pre eclampsia. They may try to get the bp under control first, but ultimately will probably try to deliver as that will bring it down.

Best wishes to her

I had medication for v high BP but as it came down on the meds (and there were no symptoms of pre-eclampsia) I was left alone and went into labour naturally at 40+10. They don't always induce.

Thank you so much for the advice. I guess I just wait now to see what happens!

This happened to someone I know a couple of weeks ago. Mild contractions had already started when severely high bp was noiced in hospital. Gave prostin to speed up the labour, hooked up to magnesium sulphate for the bp, semi epidural given and after many hours teh baby was safely delivered.
