Length of Umbilical Cord?

This may seem like a weird question but...

I am considering a physiological third stage and a lot of the time this seems to involve the cord not being cut until the placenta is delivered. Is the cord long enough for you to (comfortably?)breastfeed your baby if it is still attached to the placenta inside you?

well, i have only had 2 babies and both times babies were up on my chest as soon as they were born. the cord was definietly (SP?) long enough. dont know about anyone else though.

i had a very short (but fat!) cord - dd couldn't be lifted onto my tummy and they had to cut the cord to lift her up. i think most cords are long enough though from speaking to friends.

Generally speaking yes they are long enough.

Think back to the days when people did not cut the cord (a lotus birth), babies would still be breastfed after birth.

You do not have to wait until the placenta has been born to cut it though.

As long as you wait for the cord to stop pulsating, and all that amazing cord blood goes into the rightful place (your baby) and you do not have syntometrine. That is still physiological.
