I wonder if you can help me?

Sorry to pick on you Lulumana but your always on the threads with sound advice

I'm pregnant with DC2, and had a bit of a rough time with DD1 basically my birth in brief:-

2 Cord Vessel so was told pre delivery that I would be in high dependancy

Waters broke 5am on the Wednesday..

DD was back to back though I wasn't told this till I was 10cm dialated! I was at the hospital form just after midnight on the Thursday, as I'd been at home for about 4hrs and couldn't cope with the pain! I felt such a wimp when i got to the hospital (didn't know she was back to back then though!) survived on g&a till about 2am then had pethadine, hubby was sent home, then 2nd shot the next morning can't remember exact time about 10am had epidural as couldn't have any more pethadine!

I'd only got to about 4cm stayed here till about 10pm on the hormone drip but dd kept going into distress so they kept taking it off and on, was making new progress - shift swap and hormone drip went back on but they decided they couldn't keep going
and my epidural only worked on side...so I had signed the c-section forms and was prepared for theatre however they did an internal and discovered I was 10cm dialated so they would give a spinal try ventouse twice if that failed they would use forceps if that failed a emergency section...the attempt at ventouse and the final forceps delivery was done in theatre (I was cut and stitched) after I had the jab to speed up the delivery of the placenta the placenta was retained so they had to have a bit more of a feel around

so my recovery overall for me not to feel the pain where the stitches were was a good 6months probably longer, if I sat funny or moved funny from sitting I was in agony!

Rubbish Pelvic floor now I have to go to the loo when I need to go!

So at my booking in appointment my MW made an appointment for me with consultant as she wasn't sure about the chances of 2 cord vessel again (I couldnt find anything on the internet about it being hierdartary)...also we'd gone through the birth and I had discussed exploring hypnobirth...

So at 16 weeks I went to see the consultant who advised the 2cord vessel isn't herdartary and did a quick basic scan to confirm this pregnancy all seems normal!

Also discussed last birth which I said I wanted to avoid the same circumstances (instrumental) and was looking at hypnobirth and anyway he offered me an elective section...I hadn't expected that!

So now I'm in a dilema see an elective would be easier with Childcare (my mum lives 150miles away and I would prefer her to my IL's to look after DD) but its major surgery... and not being able to drive for 6 weeks woudl be a killer for me! But if ELCS hubby could take 2 weeks paternity and 2 weeks leave so not so bad...

I am scared that I won't cope with labour and birth again which I know will slow down labour! I've tried reading the Hypnobirthing book, the CD makes me want to scream (annoy voices)

Sadly I can't afford a Doula unless I win the lotto! Is there anything else I can try to go more down the natural route or would I be best going down the ELCS?

My midwife is supportive whcih ever way I decide to go but I really need some prospective on this! Is the 2nd birth likely to be like the first? do we follow our mothers birthing? I was forceps (oldest) my brother was 36hrs labour after being a month overdue (they messed up the dates and didn't believe my mum when she tried to tell them) and being induced and had forceps again....

Also I'm struggling to find a comprehensive list of the risks to mother and baby for C-sections? Is there somewhere I can look??

Thank you if you managed ot read this far without falling asleep!

xx

I wouldn't go by your mums history necessarily as labours which have been interfered with can give you no real idea how they would have been had they been allowed to progresss spontaneously.

your labour was augmented so you cannot tell how that would have gone had it progressed spontaneously.

The obs says that 2 cord is not a guarantee so there is no reason to assume that you will not have a physiological birth should it progress spontaneously.

Read up about physiological birth and how we women can grow and birth babies, regain faith in yourself. Ina May Gaskin, Dr Sarah Buckley for example.

Planning a CS GUARANTEES 100% you will have a major abdominal wound, and impacts on any future births you may have. Planning a physiological birth gives you around 75% chance of not having surgery. And this can be much higher too. A link for CS risks here

You say you can't afford a Doula, but you there are ways and means.....I'm sure Lulumama and I, or others, could help you with this offlist

Thanks Klaw I'll have a look up on Sarah Buckley!

Thanks for the section info as well! This is last baby so the future births isn't an issue

When I looked at Doula's the cost i can't justify

Info above from Klaw is great.

if you log onto www.doula.org.uk they also have a Hardship fund and you could contact them to see if you qualify or you could email a few of your local doulas and see if they would be able to take you on for a discounted rate?

Also, if you think about all the clothes / toys / equipment that one can spend on babies, spending money on a Doula is nothing.

Klaw · 23/02/2010 23:28

I believe a VBAC is 90% antenatal prep and 10% actual birthing and, as FlyingDuchess says, having that emotional and physical support is priceless. I'm not just saying that because I'm a Doula. I'm sayign it as a VBACer. I'm saying it as woman to woman. However you get that support is up to you, whether it's from a Doula, from online sites, from a VBAC friendly consultant midwife at your local Trust..... get it!

Did you see One Born Every Minute tonight with a VBAC. Her partner is a classic example of how NOT to support your labouring woman. I could have cheerfully throttled the man when he started on at her Plus the programme was an excellent advert for encouring stayign at home
