group b strep/pph... consultant unit?

I'm pg with #3, and would really like to give birth at the local MLU, which is in the same hospital as the consultant unit, just down the corridor. With dd I was transferred from an outlying MLU and had a prolonged labour ending up with epidural, ventouse, episiotomy and pph (6oomls). With #2 I had to be booked into the consultant ward as I'd had the previous pph, and they put a 'venflon' in, but because I had a supportive mw and detailed birthplan managed to avoid pethidine, syntocinon drip etc, and gave birth naturally.

When my son was a few days old he had a sticky eye, and they took a swab. His red book records that 'scanty growth of strep b sensitivities' were found. He had eye drops, but no other antibiotics, and didn't need any further treatment.

I mentioned this at my booking-in appt yesterday, and was told I'd probably have to go to the consultant unit for #3 because of the group b strep. I can argue with pph with the consultant because I didn't have one last time, I think it was purely due to the prolonged labour and intervention... but did ds actually have group b strep? Should I have said anything? They took a swab yesterday, and said I'd have to have another one taken at 36 weeks, so I guess I'll have to wait on the results, but get the feeling that irrespective of the outcome of the tests, their mind might be made up on the basis of some information that they didn't have on file, and perhaps I didn't need to share with them?

GBS was found in my urine early on with #2 and my community MW reduced me to floods of tears by telling me hospital, no pool, continual monitoring.... I wanted a repeat of my happy home waterbirth as with #1. And got it.
Rang the MLU to ask if I could go there rather than big teaching hospital and they had no problem with the GBS as an issue, but couldn't offer me the ABx so said I might as well stay at home - so I did. DD is fine. Planning the same again for May.

As you say, you can argue the PPH didn't happen with your 2nd, and the GBS was 'scanty' so as long as you agree to be paranoid about baby's temp/breathing etc for the first couple of days I don't see why you shouldn't be able to go to the MLU.

Good luck
