what was the worst bit of giving birth or afterbirth for you?

mine was, had to have an emergency c section, so had a drain in the cut. the next day i was in agony , felt like the drain was rubbing on something inside me. i couldnt move.
i couldnt let the doctor or nurse take the drain out as it was so sore. i had to eventually pull it out little by little myself. it was in a good 6 inches, not 2 inches like i was told. as soon as it was out i was like a new woman. i was up and about. couldnt believe a little tube could cause so much pain.

Having a PPH (lost 1500ml of blood) after the birth, having to go into theatre to get stiched up and not being with DS for 2 hours.

But DH does treasure the special time the two of them had together.

MrsDoolittle · 13/07/2005 11:31

Poor chap, anchovies My dh would be just the same, mortified if anyone should treat him like that. I would be furious too

Nemo1977 · 13/07/2005 11:34

worst bit for me was afterbirth..the placenta..arghhhhhhhh that hurt soooo much more than giving birth but must have been well attached as i had an odd bleed so ended up being in for 3 days

flowerfairy · 13/07/2005 11:44

My worst bit was the stitching up afterwards, it was the only time i kind of lost my temper.

ALso feeling very sore and having to sit on very hard chairs to eat tea in dining room.

And of course that first time going to the toilet for a poo! Sorry if tmi.

LittleB · 13/07/2005 12:00

it took so long. was in early stages for 4 days, waters broke day2, contractions regular but not strong enough, until they gave me a drip to speed it up so had hardly any sleep and was knackered, then broke rest of waters and had 1 1/2 hours of agony waiting for epidural. didn't mind being stitched too much though.

LIZS · 13/07/2005 12:07

Transition - the pressure in my backside and losing control of my legs ! Pain in my coccyx lingered for weeks afterwards.

Oh and not feeling able to go to the loo on the ward because would have had to wheel ds with me, so hung on until dh turned up for visiting by which time I was fit to burst (reassuring that my bladder had regained its capacity though !).

shalaa · 13/07/2005 15:51

hmm was in labour for 3 days, ended up having an episiotomy (sp), ventouse, stirrups and DS had the cord wrapped twice round his neck. If it wasn't for my best friend (gas and air) I would have been an absolute wreck. The pain from the episiotomy and bed sore on my bum were agony, took a good 2 weeks before I could sit properly and another 2 before I could walk any distance without it feeling like my insides were about to fall out my fanny!!

shalaa · 13/07/2005 15:55

Oh yes and the overstretched staff who made you feel like you were a nuisance and who told me DS was breast feeding fine, sent us home only to find out from the community midwife that he wasn't latching on correctly and was dehydrated. Still fuming about that, I asked them several times to check if he was feeding correctly as he seemed hungry all the time and they looked briefly and said 'yeah he's fine'.

jenkel · 13/07/2005 16:24

The stitches.......

JOD1002 · 13/07/2005 18:13

After the birth not really being able to stand up straight, the bleeding, wetting myself etc. Would do it all again thou!

Em32 · 13/07/2005 20:37

Getting an womb infection after the birth that had me in convulsions with the pain. It was much worse than labour and definitely affected my initial feelings about motherhood. That was after a 7 1/2 hour labour with no pain relief - felt quite impressed with myself and then that ruined it. 33 weeks pg at the moment and feeling a little bit worried about comments about afterpains with no2!

mandyc66 · 13/07/2005 21:04

I think the worse thing is the 6 week check!!! But managed to avoid it with last 2 infact not sure they still do it!!!

angie0201 · 13/07/2005 21:07

agreed stitches def ooch and the midwifes checking them ohh not nice!

ElliesMomma · 13/07/2005 21:16

The worst thing about my labour with Ellie (DD) was she got too cold as she was born outside in the hospital carpark..........This is how she was born......... I HAD A REALLY EASY LABOUR SO I WAS LUCKY AS ELLIE IS MY FIRST CHILD I gave birth to our beautiful daughter Ellie Louise Lowe on the 16th of April, 4 days early! She couldn?t wait 2 come, she was born in the back of my Dads car in the hospital car park and my Dad delivered her!!! So I had a natural birth, no pain relief or anything, until i delievered the plencenta (then i had Gas and Air) none of the midwifes could believe how quick she came because she was my first baby. My contrations started at around 1am, I had my show at 2 in the morning, my waters broke at 2.15am and Ellie arrived at 2.30am. She weighed 6lb 15, had jet black hair and lovely blue eyes and she looks just like her daddy.

mandyc66 · 13/07/2005 21:18

what a lovely story. Watch out for number 2 though how fast will that be?!!!!!!!

hellomama · 13/07/2005 21:23

Stitches... awful, awful. The lochia was pretty horrible too, all those yucky sanitary towels! Labour and birth a breeze (almost!) compared to the stitches.

melbob · 14/07/2005 00:04

The moment when after a 5 day induction and the syntocinon worked like lightening and the anaethetistis told me I couldn't have an epidural because the power cut meant they couldn't take blood tests

Linnet · 14/07/2005 00:28

The afterpains after dd2 was born were awful, I didn't realise they would be so bad. I'd rather have gone through labour again than suffer them, but they only last a day or two and not at every feed.

And breastfeeding the second time was terrible. Dd1 just latched on and fed and was quite happy. Dd2 was a completely different baby who would latch on then get lazy half way through and half come off resulting in sore cracked bleeding nipples. And she wanted fed every hour on the hour, I couldn't cope and she went onto bottles much sooner than planned, I still feel bad about that and feel I should have tried harder.

eldestgirl · 14/07/2005 05:41

The head crowning. It STINGS like hell.
Internal examination after DS1 to see if the placenta was all out. God that hurt.
Having a shower afterwards and realising that the trickle of blood wouldn't stop.
Wearing horribly big pads for weeks which stink.
Brother in law jokes about when Red Letter Day was. Neither me nor DH realised that he was talking about sex after childbirth and then we didn't know what to say. Now that my sister is having a baby, maybe he will realise how crass he was!
Oh yes and sex post birth is pretty grim the first time.

Scraggyaggy · 14/07/2005 08:01

I was so scared of going in the bath... don't ask me why, so I opted for showers for the first week. Looking back, I realise that a bath would have been the better choice.

Shipping · 14/07/2005 09:05

Agree with WickedWitch - all dreadful. I was in labour in hospital for 36 hours but just didn't dilate for hours and hours...waiting three hours for the epidural was a nightmare, but bliss when it finally arrived! Horrific time actually giving birth with five tries at vonteuse and two at forceps and it was only when they threatened me with an emergency c-section after all this that ds eventually popped out.
Wonderful, wonderful result but the thought of going through all this again absolutely terrifies me and really don't think I'll have another.
And don't get me started on piles or breastfeedimg...!!!!

highlander · 14/07/2005 10:26

those horrible engorged breasts for the first few days that my milk was in.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more painful than my CS wound!

fairyfly · 14/07/2005 10:28

being brought carnations

Klara · 14/07/2005 11:00

Worst part? When they broke my tailbone as the bloody gynae was pulling ds out with the forceps. Couldn't sit down for about 6 weeks. Pain took over a year to go.

Any when the midwife came round on day 4 to ask my dh and myself what we were "doing about contraception"....I lost my cool slightly and told her she had got to be f'n joking!

would love another one though.....

klara
