I had three (gestational diabetes and therefore big babies).

My doctor did advise I not having anymore after DC3 as I was getting sicker with each pregnancy so I was sterilised.

I think it depends how well you are otherwise and how long you have had in between each C-section (I only had 13 months between my first two, doc not happy).

Are you sure you would need another C-section? I know it is likely but not always an absolute necessity.

If you doctor says it is safe I would listen to him as he has your case history in front of him.

There was a MNer who'd had at least 5 IIRC. I think she may have had 6.

My mil had three sections back in the 1960's and the 1970's. After section one she nearly died and the doctors asked fil for consent to sterilise her but he refused. After section number three she was told that a further pregnancy would seriously jeopardise her life. She wanted more children and tried for another child but didn't fall pregnant and was refused fertility treatment on the NHS. When she told me this I thought she was crazy I couldn't understand how she could even consider a fourth pregnancy when the risks were so high. I am expecting baby number two and mil has been so worried that she has already said that she hopes I don't have any mad ideas about trying for a third.

It was very different back in those days. I think csections carry a much lower risk then they did back then. My mil had vertical incisions which I think are riskier and all three sections were carried out under a general anaesthetic.

I've just searched the archives and it was 7 c-sections! She was called zipper.

One of my friends at school had 10 siblings. All C-section but her mum had been worn not to have any more as her uterus was "paper thin".

BigBadMummy · 01/02/2010 12:33

Hi Lucy It was my choice as I didnt want to go through that again and had three healthy DCs.

I do regret it now as I then got divorced three years later and am now remarried. There is a part of me taht would have liked to have one more but my DH loves my DCs.

It didnt make me lose my mojo .

That really is an old wives tale. I think it stems from women being exhausted from looking after a baby, not as a result of the C-Section or sterilisation!

I'm pretty sure Zipper was in the UK but I don't know where. She had her 7th in 2006 and I don't think she's been on MN since unless she changed her name.

I know someone who had 5, and her Obstetrician did say she could have another.

7 children by any method available would reduce MNing time

The ob-gynae who did my second (and last!) said she advised no more than four. She had had particular dilemmas - notably a woman who had already had three or four sections (medical reasons) and was then expecting twins. It was important for her not to go into normal labour - risk of rupture after several sections. It was important, for the twins' sake, not to deliver them too early. And yet twins often arrive significantly early...so when to schedule the section?

All turned out fine but she gave this example as one of the problems.
