Anyone had a successful VBAC after no labour in 1st pregnancy?

I'm slightly jumping the gun here as not even 5wks pregnant yet ...

However, my 1st pg was twins and ended up in ELCS at 36 wks due to pre-eclampsia. Consultant at the time said there was no point in induction as it wouldn't work as I showed absolutely no signs of labour. I hadn't even had braxton hicks (at least I didn't think I had).

So this time round (assuming that there is just the one) I will have to decide between ELCS again or to go for a VBAC.

My worst nightmare is try for a VBAC and end up with an EMCS. Has anyone been in my position, gone for a VBAC and had a natural delivery? I know they won't induce so I guess I would have to hope I go into labour spontaneously.

If the risk is more than 50% that I would end up with a c-section anyway then I would probably go for an ELCS. I didn't find the recovery at all a problem last time although I will have 3.5 yr old twins to look after this time .

I have 4.5 year old twins whom I had by section. I also have DD3 who is 1 who I had by VBAC.

I had a section first time around as the babies were breech. At 38 weeks they started to get concerned about my BP and went straight into the section - however it wasn't pre-eclampsia. I had shown no signs of labour either, not even a Braxton Hicks in sight!

I was very very keen to avoid a section the second time around due to the recovery and having, like you, to look after two very lively twins as well!

They said they wouldn't induce me second time around due to the previous section, but as I recall there were various things they could try to get things going including a sweep.

If you want to try a VBAC I would hold out for one, bearing in mind that if the pre-eclampisa came up again it wouldn't happen. I wonder if the pre-eclam was due to the twin pregnancy and therefore might not occur again? I had big problems with platelets and blood clotting with my twin pregnancy that didn't materialise with a singleton pregnancy.

In the end, I went 4 days overdue with DD3 and labour then happened naturally. Hope things work out well for you - I'm sure your hospital would be able to advise you on your options. You will probably be put under consultant led care due to the previous section.

I was so pleased to have my VBAC - I actually enjoyed it in a wierd pain ridden way and the recovery was ten times easier despite stitches etc. But I worked very hard at accepting during the pregnancy that it might not happen due to my previous problems - so that I wouldn't be too brokenhearted if it was anotehr section.

Good luck and congrats!

Your hospital should keep stats on their successful VBAC rates - ours is 70% (so almost comparable to first time mums normal delivery rate)Having said that we are committed to normalising VBAC, so the majority of our VBAC woman are not continuously monitored and can go in the pool etc. Having never laboured actually goes in your favour in terms of having a successful VBAC, as most sections in labour are done for something like slow progress which often recurs.

I will definitely ask about the hospitals VBAC rates - its v useful to know that they should have them.

Yes the pre-e was most likely due to having twins and I think my risk of it happening again is similar to a first time mum although no-one could say for sure. It took a long time for my bp to come down after I had them, even with medication so I'm really hoping it isn't a problem this time round. I know I will be classed as high risk though because of that and because of previous ELCS and age.

Anyone else??
