Breech Delivery Experiences

I'm 29 weeks with twins that have been stubbornly in breech position throughout. I am still hoping that twin 1 will turn before she makes an appearance but my consultant today gave me a leaflet on breech birth and told me to get used to the idea that both might well be born this way - the little buggers

I was told a doctor would be delivering them as none of the midwives at my hospital have enough breech delivery experience but apart from that I can keep to my birth plan.

I've done a search on previous threads and most posts are about CSection due to breech, so I thought I would fish for breech natural delivery experiences.

Thanks in advance!

My mum had a breach birth over 30 years ago (me), it was pretty rare then. She had an episiotomy and it was all ok - I was under 6lb, so not too big, came out bum first though (my dad: what a beautiful baby!). I don't know if that helps at all! And it's as nice a way as any to bump for you. Good luck.

My friend gave birth to breech twins. what do you need to know?

DD1 was born as a breech baby. She was 9lb 12, my first and born at home with IMs.

The conclusion of the (large quantity!) of research we did was that a breech birth is not intrinsically dangerous as long you have attendants confident and competent in breech birth.

Be aware that the terms "vaginal breech birth" and "vaginal breech delivery" are sometimes used interchangeably, but can also indicate very different types of birth - this article by Mary Cronk sumarises some of the key differences you might see. By these definitions DD was very definitely a vaginal breech birth.

For what its worth, I found it much more comfortable birthing a 9lb 12 breech than a 6lb 11 cephalic!

Ooh, thanks ladies, I was beginning to think nobody had done such a thing!

What I think I need is some idea of what to expect in hospital. I would love to have a home birth but due to previous CS nobody wants to support it. There are no IMs here where we live but our hospital is very supportive of my minimal intervention birth plan - except for the warning that they don't allow midwives to deliver breech babies. I am concerned though that more conditions might start to creep in such as constant monitoring etc.

There are so many birth experience tales on MN but as far as I can see, most posts about breech presentation are in reference to it being the reason for CS whereas it is not used as a reason for CS referral at my hospital.

SheriDoula did your friend give birth at home or in hospital?

Tangle, most of what Mary Cronk lists under 'breech delivery' are 'no-nos' on my birth plan. That website was useful to read - thanks.
