ds1, cs planned for 38 weeks. labour started naturally at 36 weeks. ended up with cs anyway.

same with ds2.

i don't think that how many weeks you are for one child has any effect on how many weeks you are for subsequent children though.

i think you may be pinning your hopes on nothing there. sorry

Grrr - I had DS1 at 35 weeks and am now 35 weeks with DC2 and thoroughly fed up already, doesn't look like it is going to budge for a while though! I can't bear the thought that if I go overdue I could have another 7 weeks to go - aaagh, thats almost two months. Any ideas to help save my sanity???

Owlingate · 15/01/2010 08:43

Baby number one was 35 weeks, next was 38 weeks. Yours might be the same. After my tiny jaundiced badly feeding first baby I was really happy to get a nice fat hungry one. Try to think of it that way - the longer they're in, the happier and chubbier they are!

mistletoekisses · 15/01/2010 10:05

DS1 booked for elec cs at 37 weeks. waters went night before and had emergency cs

DS2 booked for elec cs at 39 weeks. contractions started 38+3 and had emergency cs.

DS1 was very small (suspected IUGR) and born 5lbs 1oz. In hindsight lead to a very stressful first few months re. feeding.
DS2 born a healthy 6lbs 8oz. Only 8 days old, but he is much healthier and happier. And easier to feed. Already sleeping 3 1/2 hour stints.

I know you are uncomfy - but I second the poster who says better in than out at this stage. Will make the first few weeks/ months much easier for you and bub.

MummyMellie · 15/01/2010 10:31

Thanks Owlingate and Mistletoekisses, that makes me feel better - DS1 was certainly jaundiced and a terrible feeder - two hourly feeds for the first three months! However, he did weigh in at 6lb4, pretty hefty for a 35 week-er!
I shall keep telling myself that every additional day in is an easier day outside! Congrats on DS2 mistletoe, thats great news.

DD1 was born at 37 weeks so everyone (myself included) assumed DD2 would be early too.

Nope, she hung around in there until 40+2 the little monkey.

Good luck, be ready but don't get your hopes up.

As others have said, the longer they're in there the better.

mummynumnum · 15/01/2010 20:53

Tis my second.First dd was emergency cs.induced-never engaged or did anything and a week late,so all these pains and aches and football between legs is all new to me.

happymatleave · 15/01/2010 20:55

I've no idea how I've ended up looking at the childbirth threads! I'm either broody, nostalgic, or just plain jelous that I won't be doing it again

Anyway ds1 was 38 weeks, dd 36 weeks and ds2 came on his due date. He wasn't late but god those last few weeks dragged on for ever! I assumed that he would be early like the other two but it didn't happen. Really worth the wait though

SpangleMaker · 15/01/2010 21:04

I was speaking to a mum at baby group yesterday who has 4 DC, all born at 36 weeks. My DS was born at 35+3 - I'm glad I missed out those last few weeks of pregnancy but would have been better for him really to hang on in there for a couple of weeks. Good luck

JammyQueenOfTheSewers · 15/01/2010 21:15

I can top that MummyMellie - DD was born at 35 1/2 weeks and was half an ounze short of 7lb!

MummyTumble · 16/01/2010 10:10

DD born at 38 weeks, then DS at 36 weeks but had to stay in SCBU for a few weeks. Would like this one to come somewhere in between. DS was a healthy 6lb 7oz at 36 weeks but feeding was a nightmare.

mistletoe am curious that you had an elcs booked for 37 weeks with your first, but they booked you in for 39 weeks with your second !

I never got as far as my booked section dates either...

mistletoekisses · 16/01/2010 11:04

Mummytumble -first pregnancy, DS had started measuring small from 32 weeks, was resolute breech and had I lots of reduced fetal movement. They basically wanted him out as soon as he got to full term (if not sooner, but scans etc. were showing that all was ok)

Second pregnancy, completely different circumstances - DS measured fine for dates, was never breech, and moved heaps. My consultant explained that 39 weeks is always the preferred time to do elec cs as risks of complications to baby as a result of lung immaturity fall to 2% (from 4% if elec cs is done at 38 weeks).
It is a different kettle of fish if labour starts spontaneously as the labour releases hormones that are what the baby needs for lungs to do final bit of maturing.
So I preferred to wait until 39 weeks. The only risk being that obviously natural labour started and would progress too quickly for csection to take place and that was a risk I was willing to take.

Long winded response, but there is your answer!

flybynight · 16/01/2010 13:51

Mu first baby was born at 36 weeks, my swcond at 39 and a half and my third was induced at 42. The wait drove me mad!

MummyTumble · 16/01/2010 16:20

Thanks for the reply mistletoe. Apologies if i appeared nosey!!

Just curious as my elc for DD was 39weeks, she was breech but i went into labour. Then DS was booked for 37 1/2 weeks (for a few reasons) and he came at 36 and had a few weeks in SCBU. I don't see the point in getting booked in for another elc at 39 weeks since i've never made it to any others but your post has made me ponder this now!!

mistletoekisses · 16/01/2010 18:05

Not nosey at all mummytumble. More than happy to share.

I think every pregnancy is different and I was happy to follow my consultants lead on when to do the section. I now know first hand that the longer the baby has to cook, the better it is for the baby. So if we decide to go doe DC3, I would do the exact same.

I was told that unless they find something with the baby / mother that they class as an obstetric risk IUGR/ Preeclampsia etc), they absolutely prefer to stick with 39 weeks.

gorge2003 · 21/01/2010 00:04

My first baby arrived at 36+5 was fine were allowed home next day 5lb 11oz he is nearly 4 now. Had my dd at 39+3 after sweep at 39 (gd) 6lb 10oz the wait from 36 weeks this time was unbearable I was ready to go into labour any day an nothing, think she would have stayed there tbh and I would have been overdue If it wasn't for sweep, she arrived 75 hours after sweep!
