likelyhood of c-section with big baby

Hi,

I was told that baby is on the big size and will be about 10 pounds. This is my first baby (I am 40 years old).

Is there a likelyhood that C-section will be suggested?

thanks

Would also depend on your size. We have a family history of big babies and it was a factor taken into consideration when hosp gave me an elective. (I'm around 5'3 and quite small boned, although certainly not too small to have a normal size baby/labour - was 37 yrs old in first pregnancy). I also had bleeding problems at 15 and 30 weeks (low placenta apparently). In the end had elective at 39 weeks (baby 9 pounds). So - in summary - it's one of the factors. But if you want a VB and there are no other issues then I'm sure they would agree - a friend of mine had a bouncing 11 pounder when she was 42!

I don't know about the c-section issue........just wanted to add that I was told DD would be 10lb (section wasn't mentioned) and she was only 7lb 12oz. Unfortunately growth scans etc can be very inaccurate!

I was told DS was going to be a whopper and had all the growth scans etc and was not offered a csection because of this (I was 39 and 5'1 and small). I did have a section for completely unrelated reasons and he turned out to be 7lb2oz!

DD was 10 pounds 7. I don't think they had any idea she was going to be that big. There was no talk of C-section. I think it would depend on two main things - your size and if you go overdue.

I am a FIRM BELIEVER that your body would not carry a baby that it was unable to give birth to, unless of course in exceptional circumstances such as gestational diabetes.

My dd1 (first baby) was 9lb12 and an OP baby and noone mentioned section to me - it was ventouse and I had a tear but actually less damage than my dd2 (3rd baby) who gave me a far worse tear at only 7lb15.

Don't know what your ago would have to do with it?

Growth scans are really unreliable though - my SIL had one cos she had GD, they said 10lb and my nephew was just under 7 in the end!

i had a big baby with dc2 and birth was easier than with dc1 so doesn't necessarily have to be a problem
