Waters broiken at 3am this morning, still no contractions, help

Hi all my waters broke this morning and the hospital are keen to induce me tomorrow morning if I haven't had a contraction yet. This scares me as I wanted a water birth with low medical intervention and induction would mean no water birth and a syntocinon drip and possibly an epidural which I'm really not keen on.
Does anyone have any tips how to speed things up? I've been for a walk and a bath, tweaked a nipple or two and walked up steps sideways and still nothing.
I've got 12 hours and am trying not to panic but any advice gratefully received

This happened to me with DS, I bounced on my gym ball for ages went to bed with no signs, woke up and was in definite labour!
I went in to the MLU at 2.30am on the morning I was booked in to the hospital at 8.30am - DS born naturally at 10.25am.
Get bouncing!!!
GOOD LUCK.
Don't panic tho, even if you're induced you will be fine.

With DS my waters went at 6am Tuesday, and I didn't feel a contraction until 3am Weds when I woke to go to the loo - like you I wanted a low intervention birth so didn't actually 'fess up to the hospital that my waters had gone until I was having contractions (was keeping an eye on the clock myself but felt I was better without external pressure)

Try to relax - have you got any hypnobirthing type CDs? (DH and I went out for a lovely meal that evening with some contractors from work who he was supposed to be having a meeting with the next day!)
Make sure your bags (I recommend one for you and one for baby) are ready as this may help you to relax
Eat well if you're comfy so your body is fuelled and ready to go, when I tried to eat porridge on the Weds am I threw it back up.
SLEEP - you may not get another chance for a bit
God luck, will be looking out for announcement soon

Sounds like you're doing all the right things.

NICE guidelines actually state you can go 96 hours from waters breaking to induction. When my waters broke I was given some disposable thermometers and had to take my temp twice a day to check there were no signs of infection.
Waters broke early hours Saturday morning - DD born on Wednesday.

Good luck!!

Thanks everyone, I really am not keen on a birth with lots of intervention but don't have the confidence to challenge the professionals and after readin about strep B etc am nervous of putting my baby at risk. Wish I had thought to hold off on the phone call to the midwife this morning (am sure my NCT teacher recommended this but in the panic this morning my ability to be sneaky flew out the window!)
Thanks for the NICE reccs Louby and for all the positive tales and encouragement from everyone else. I'll update as soon as something, ANYTHING!! happens.

DS was my first salvadory, I was confirmed GBS+ with my second so was probably + for DS as well, both DC are fine

I think they can check to see how much fluid is still surrounding baby. If there is enough to keep baby going you can wait a few days (96 hours)

I cant remember if they scan you or just have a good feel of your bump to tell. I would defo ask for them to check before inducing you that early.

My waters leaked with dd on the Tuesday, I was booked for an induction on the Saturday. Luckily I woke up in labour on Wednesday.

When it happened to me I only had 18 hrs from water going to delivery because of some stupid rules at my hospital even though I had no infection (they took swabs)

So, I was on the clock and determined to have my planned homebirth. I went for a walk (complete with enormous incontinence pad to catch the gushing!) and tweaked my nipples like I was trying to tune in an old transister radio.

It worked Good luck x

You don't have to be induced at all! Totally your choice.
If nothing has started in the morning, get on the phone to www.aims.org.uk first

If you have an induction, it is no longer your birth

Hope it goes well. I had same, but just did not go into labour, ended up being induced which was a drag. There was a rule at my hospital about 48 hours after waters breaking to deliver baby to reduce risk of infection. I did test positive for Strep B and DD was on antibiotics for a couple of days as a precaution. Despite all this, both she and I came out healthy and well.
I feel quite relaxed looking back on the delivery that despite it ending up very medical, I don't feel cheated - it was just a different experience. I ended up having a c-section as labour was not progressing and afterwards my midwife commented that this was probably a silver lining for me and DD as she was such a whopper - nearly 10lbs birth weight and a vaginal delivery could well have damaged both her and me.

urbanewarrior · 04/01/2010 23:09

With DD my waters broke on Wednesday am and I was induced on the Friday on a syntocinon drip which I was petrified of. Needlessly it turned out - had very peaceful and labour with my tens machine and only a bit of g&a at the end.

Best of luck - you hear so many scare stories about induction and I've had it twice now (DS was late) and in my experience it isn't that bad.

thell · 04/01/2010 23:15

I'm sure I read - make sure you drink plenty of water, definitely 2L in a day, gradually (not gallons - don't overdo it!), and it helps not to do anything that may introduce infection, like having a bath - wait until contractions have started.

Good luck!!

Anyone else hoping that salvadory has gone quiet because things have moved on a stage?
