What are the chances of having to have c-section?

Hi

Im 36+3 days and had midwife the other day. She said she wasnt sure how baby was laying so was going to book me in for a scan hopefully this week.

The problem is the baby is still extremely active and is constantly changing positions on a daily basis.
What do you think the chances of me having to have a c-section are?

Would they make the decision based upon this scan this week?
I know different hospitals have different policies.

Thanks

I would doubt it if the baby is still quite active? My baby was lying back to back until about an hour before he was born! However I suppose if it's breach then they might have different ideas.

Have you been doing the usual forward leaning stuff? i.e. on your hands and knees, making your tummy into a 'hammock' for the baby. The spine is apparently the heaviest part of their body, so if you do that regularly for, I don't know, maybe 10 mins or so a time, it will help to encourage your baby to get into the right position.

Also (and this is not a bizarre hippy theory) apparently there's a very high success rate (about 70%, IIRC from my excellent preg guide) from the mother 'telling' the baby to turn. I'm not quite sure how you do this, but I've heard many tales of it working and was impressed to see that my preg book mentions it as being extremely effective.

So don't give up, and good luck!

you'll only have the c-section if the baby is still breech on the day it is booked - they will scan before prepping you for surgery. so don't worry about having an unnecessary c-section. Have you seen www.spinningbabies.com? Also you can opt for an ECV (turning) if your baby is breech/transverse and you want to see if it will turn the right way round. Mine was v v painful but I'm glad I tried it even though it was unsuccessful. Good luck

My sil is a MW and said to me that they will scan just before performing the C section to check the position. If baby has got into a favourable one then you will be offered a natural birth. This may just be local policy of course, worth checking with your own mw

I'm pretty sure that happens everywhere, Fibilou, as I said in my post.

MrsJamin has good advice.
I agree that what baby is doing now isn't necessarily what s/he will be doing on the day. ds3 was breech right up to 37 weeks and I was advised to bear in mind that a c-section might be needed if he didn't turn, but he did so I had a "normal" delivery without any complications or need for interventions. Good luck

Great link, MrsJamin, I've read it all and bookmarked it too! Thanks!

(also pleased to see they use my 'hammock' phrase several times )
