3cm to 10cm in 27 mins in 1st labour.... what happens in 2nd labour?

Hello

So, I'm 37+4 or something like that

In my first labour with DD, I went from 3cm to 10cm and 'omg I need to push NOW' in under 30 mins

Contractions were constant and I was begging them for pain relief but they said I wasn't progressed enough to have anything, then they eventually got an anaesthetist in for an epidural but as he was prepping my back I felt baby about to arrive

I didn't really have a pushing stage, I think she arrived in one push

Sooo.. my question is... will my second labour be fast?

Have recently moved and the hospital is at least a 30min drive away...

thanks

Plan for a home birth...

coldtits · 20/12/2009 13:27

prepare for a home birth. Seriously.

The slightest twinge and you need your midwife to come!

ChasingSquirrels · 20/12/2009 13:27

Who can tell!

How long was 1st labour in total?

Lulumama · 20/12/2009 13:28

homebirth

your husband and/or birth partners need to read up on emergency delivery.

as soon as you twinge , get to hospital or call MW

you oculd ask for a planned induction at 38 weeks

ChasingSquirrels · 20/12/2009 13:28

and have you seen this recent thread?

Heated · 20/12/2009 13:34

Get some seat protection. Dh's cousin had her second in the car.

More practically if you labour fast is it feasible to go to the labour ward once contractions start?

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 20/12/2009 13:36

Baby 2, first labour, pushed out in 20 minutes. 1-10cm in no time at all.
Baby 3, second labour, pushed out in 7 minutes, 1-10cm even quicker.

crumpette · 20/12/2009 13:41

thanks for link chasingsquirrels, I guess it varies!!

fab yikes!! that is so fast!!!!

My labour in total was about 4 hours I think, it's all a bit of a blur now, but the MWs didn't believe I was contracting when I said I was and the contractions which were mightily painful didn't register on the monitor... so they checked my cervix and it was only 3cm... and then she was born shortly after

I was advised at the time to have a homebirth next time around but DP doesn't like the idea of being at home (hah! might be in his car...!)

My first was pretty fast, I was checked at 1cm then left until I was pushing as well. Only time for gas and air.

Second time I had a planned homebirth, the MWs knew I would be fast again so two came at once.

I would go to the hospital the minute you have that first twinge.

It's a lot better the second time around because in your head you know that it is probably going to be fast and you can get through it. The first time a lot of my fear and anxiety was that if this was labour, it really really hurt more than I thought and the MWs told me I could have 12 hours of it so I was panicking a bit. They actually apologised afterwards and said no wonder I was screaming if I was dilating that fast. Second time around I knew that although the contractions were one on top of the other it meant it was going to be fast again.

Second time I just went with it a bit more, sucked on the G&A like there was no tomorrow until I felt the urge to push, second birth was my best.

crumpette · 20/12/2009 13:47

I know if I go into labour at home they will usually say to stay at home for a while, do you think it would be OK to go to the hospital anyway and risk irritating the midwives?

crumpette · 20/12/2009 13:48

I think I am starting to panic a bit!!!

SleighGirl · 20/12/2009 13:53

If you are 30 minutes from the hospital then I think you need to book for homebirth so you have the stuff you need to hand and phone for an amublance at first twinge.....

Lulumama · 20/12/2009 13:56

tell your DH it is far safer to have a planned homwbirth than face the real possibility of delivering in the car . if things progress quickly at home and no MWs are there you have the option to call 999. if you are in the car, you're kind of stuck.

lynniep · 20/12/2009 14:04

my 2nd was very different and a little bit longer (4 hrs total compared to 3). I had obvious contractions this time rather than just a constant pain, but I'd still be concerned about the distance from the hospital. agree wth homebirth suggestions.

crumpette · 20/12/2009 14:31

thanks for comments, am seeing MW this week so will ask about homebirth (DP now says why haev I left it so late... !) or at least being prepared just in case.... eeek..

this happens in all my labours.

dd was 17 hours to get to 4 cm, then 4cm to baby out in about half an hour

ds1 was 15 hours to get to 3cm, and other hour to get to 5cm, the baby in my arms less than half an hour later

ds2 was 5.5 hours of frantic leg crossing (long drive to hospital) to get to 4cm, then baby out in just a few contractions.

be warned, the mws will completely ignore you when you warn them what's going to happen... the mws for both ds's were far more shocked than i was despite me telling them i'd go in a few contractions once i hit 4/5cm.

it'll be easier for you this time as you'll be prepared for the quickness, and the pushing will be even faster, ds2 honestly shot out, the mw was out of the room and his shoulders were being born by the time she came running bcak in.

Oblomov · 20/12/2009 14:38

I agree. I was quick. 2nd was quicker. 0- pushing in 1/2 hour.
maybe drive there, upon the first first twinge. don't even bother phoning, only to be fobbed off by some mw thinking it will be'hours yet'. Just go. Immediately. ??

Oblomov · 20/12/2009 14:40

agree. book home birth. do you like the idea ?

TulipsAndTinsel · 20/12/2009 14:41

i've never rung in for any of mine... after dd i knew when i needed to be near a mw so plonked myself at the labour ward reception and made it clear i was having a baby soon

never got given out to for it either as they discovered soon enough i was bloody right too

my first did that, then second time around, was in labour for 42 hours, all slow between and i took forever to dilate! Every birth is different!

ChasingSquirrels · 20/12/2009 17:37

my ex-H was against a home birth, however in my view I was the one growing the baby and going to have to give birth to it, and with no reason to not have a home birth (no complications etc) and a fast 1st labour plus alot of contracting during 2nd pg (think 5/6 an hour every hour from 30 weeks, hospitaled for steriod injections when they took a trace and freaked at the frequency - and that had been a quiet hour!) made me more worried about actually getting to hospital - especially at the end of Jan/early Feb.

ds2 was born with 4, maybe 5 contractions - I delivered him myself, put my hand down, delievered his head and then the rest of him slithered out. Much better than going out into the cold .

mama2moo · 20/12/2009 17:57

Dd's birth was logged as 2.5 hours. The midwives didnt believe I was far along as I was talking and happy when I got to hospital. Half an hour later I was pushing.

This time I am having dc2 in my local hospital which is 5 mins away. If we were any further I would be planning a home birth.

Did you take rasberry tea leaf for your first? I did and wonder if that made a difference.

Mybox · 20/12/2009 19:34

Have always had fast births. You might recognise that you are feeling or thinking different to how you normally are.

My dd was born nearly 3 wks ago & what got me were the contractions I felt in my back even though they just lasted 5 seconds. Was enough to get me to the hospital just to have it checked. Once I got there was 8cm & dd born just after I got there. Don't think the m/w believed I was about to give birth!
