I'm not sure Drama, but I know that I had an emergency section with dd and my waters had gone 3 days previously and I didn't need one. I would ask your midwife/gp if you are very worried about it. The last thing you need is to be worrying about it unnecessarily

I have had an emergency and a crash section and didn't have one for either.

GloriaInEccentrica · 19/12/2009 13:01

nothing to do with membranes.

if you are a bit oozy inside when section has been done and babe out they sometimes put one in. not often though.

I had a drain in after my elective c-section. Had an emergency c-section with DS1 and the elective for DS2.

During DS2s delivery they discovered adhesions (uterus and bowel) and lots of internal scar tissue which they repaired. Because of this the stitching back up took longer than normal and they put in a drain. I don't think adhesions from previous c-sections are uncommon.

The surgeons checked the drain the next day to ensure that the internals were healing okay and that there wasn't excessive bleeding. They removed the drain about 36 hours after the delivery. It had no impact on me and I only spent 2 nights in hospital tho they gave me the option of staying for a 3rd night. Recovery from the elective was a lot swifter than the one from the emergency.

Having c-section number 3 in two and a half weeks and expect the same thing to happen again.

Forgot to add that it wasn't painful having it removed - was quick. Of course you can feel it but definitely not painful.

I had a drain, even though my waters broke right at the start of labour. No idea why as the other women on the ward didn't but was too occupied with other things to wonder why it was there. Don't remember it hurting when it came out, but it was a real pain when it was in as I had to drag it behind me on the stand anytime I went to the loo.

I have had 3 sections, had a drain in the 2nd one, was a crash section with serious complications requiring further surgery. It hurt terribly when they were removed, really shocking.

Jas · 21/12/2009 22:44

I had one after my only section (crash).

Due to the GA, I wasn't aware of it until I turned over in the bed and pulled it out later in the day.

I wouldn't recommend it as a removal method but it was over quickly!

No idea why some people need them and some not though.

I've had three sections, and only needed one after my third, which was elective. I had a lot of scar tissue from the previous two, and also had my tubes tied at the same time, so not sure if that was part of the reason for the drain.

Not to scare you, but the pain I felt while having it removed was the worst pain I have ever felt. The woman in the bed next to me had to leave the room as I was howling in pain. In the end the very patient) midwife gave me gas and air, and I was fine after that. If you do get a drain, as for some G&A beforehand!
