Bloomsbury Birth Centre at UCH

Have any mumsnetters given birth at Bloomsbury Birth Centre, part of UCH? They won't allow tours or to meet the whole midwife team, so it's really hard to decide whether to go there. Any advice really appreciated, I'm a newbie on here! Thanks

no personal experience (yet ... am booked in there for early next year) but have heard several positive stories from friends over the last few months. only drawback I hear is that they are v v busy, cos so new and shiny

I had DD there 6 weeks ago. They were lovely. I had a pool room with en suite loo and shower. I can't fault the care once I was there but because they are so busy they would not admit me until 4cms, so I got sent home once. See if you can get the dilation checked before you set off.

I ended up being transferred downstairs for an emcs due to a short cord, the staff are less nice in the labour ward.

However, try and go home asap because the post natal ward is the noisiest, brightest place on earth. Not the place for the fabled last solid night's sleep...

hello Barbican

I've given birth there. DD was born in the new unit, DS was born in Edwardian, now demolished dump!

Firsly, there is a way of getting around the no tours policy. I guess you have a community midwife, mine was based at 1A rosebery ave, and from your name I'm guessing you live in the Barbican?? maybe you're at 1A? anyway, these midwives have clinics at UCH so ask whether you can have an antenatal appointment when they have a UCH clinic, then Bobs your uncle, you're in there! They usually see you in the Birthing centre so you get to see what the rooms are like.

The facilities are great and the service you get entirely depends on how busy they are! Sorry but this is what you'll find all over London, It's russian roulette. When I went in the Birthing Suite was fairly quiet but my midwife was attending another woman, so, no one to one as the gov likes to think.

I was worried that I was in for another, leave you to get on with it, end up terrified story like I had with DS but DD moved so quickly I suddenly became a priority and the midwife had to stay with me. DD was born, quickly and efficiently, with no tearing or intervention, the fact that you've got a high trained back up resource down the corridor should anything go wrong is very reassuring.

Again, because they wern't so busy, we didnt have to give up the room I gave birth in so they got DH bed and we all stayed the night - was fantastic, I had my own shower/loo.
If it had been busy I would have been dumped on Labour ward and DH would have had to have gone home.

We saw Labour ward next day and it was like a field hospital, frankly horrible, no privacy, queues for loos, loads of noise. The birthing centre was so tranquil by comparison.

Apparently though the new maternity unit was not designed to cater for the recent spike in the birth rate, the Bloombury Birthing centre remains, under used (people tend to want to at least consider Epidurals which you can't have on the Birthing centre), so you're more like to get a better service there.

If it all goes well, is quiet and you get to stay it feels like a private hospital, only giveaway is the builders tea and instant coffee. Hope this helps. Good luck

Thanks Trellism and Splodge2001 - so reassuring to hear your success stories! Congratulations both of you.

Splodge2001 - I'm not at 1A Rosebery I'm over by City Road, but that's a great idea about going to see the midwife while at UCH! Am finding the midwife a bit intimidating so will definitely follow your advice.

Thanks both!

Hi Barbican

I'm also at UCH and live at the Barbican (and at Morelands for my antenatal checks if that's where you are too). Do feel free to contact me if you ever want to compare notes!

I had my booking appointment in the birth centre and got to see one of the rooms. Looked clean and spacious and had a number of birth 'accessories' available (ball, rocking stool thing... etc ). I didn't see the pool room but I think there is an online tour you can take on their website as I recall having some idea of what it looked like so it must have been through that.

The midwife at the booking appointment was very approachable, the one I've been seeing at Morelands slightly less so (she's nice but you have to really work with her to get her to relax a bit ;-)), and I am apparently seeing a different one next week so hopefully she will also be good.

Hi Koeda - sounds like we've had a similar midwife experience!!

Sounds like the same person! It's going to be interesting to see her response when I tell her I'm considering a homebirth ;-)

Ha ha... will be in touch, def would be good to swap notes. Thanks everyone for getting in touch and good luck
