Strep B

Just found out I have Strep B. Read lots and feel ok about preventing it in labour etc but more worried about passing it on AFTER and to other babies? Does anyone know much about Late Onset infection?

i had strep b but didnt find out until 12 hrs after ds birth but luckily for us i had antibiotics 4 hrs before he was born for kidney infection so luckily all was well

they would normally give you anti b's so during birth it s not passed on to baby and sometimes after birth give to baby also it can only be contracted through fluids while giving birth not any other time so future babies they will be well aware and you will have anti b' again

Thank-you but I googled to see how its spread and read that mothers can spread it to babys after the birth but they are not sure how???? Really worried me

You can't pass it on after the birth, the only way is through a vaginal birth and even most people who have vaginal births don't pass it on. About a third of women have this in their vaginas and many of these give birth without knowing about gbs, and have no problems with it at all. You cannot pass it on through breastfeeding either. hth

I'm afraid you can pass it on. It's really a hygiene issue. I always make sure I wash my hands before holding any young babies now. x

Thats what I had read. The whole thing makes me feel grubby!

You absolutely cannot pass it on so please don't worry

I didn't think you could pass it on but my DS had it and he was a cs so didn't come into contact with any bacteria lurking down below.

I'm sorry, it CAN be passed on through hand contact. Slightly worried the midwife doesn't know this (sorry if that came out as rude, it's just so important)If membranes have already ruptured, then cs doesn't protect either according the the strep b website.:

"Handling your (or someone else?s) baby
Group B Strep may be carried on the skin, so everyone, whether they know they carry GBS or not, should wash their hands properly and dry their hands properly before handling a baby during its first three months of life. These are normal, good hygiene measures for a young baby, not GBS specific."

From www.gbss.org.uk half way down this page

I also read it in the leaflet I was given about Group B Strep.

PLease, though don't be frightened by all of this. I just think that if you are armed with the correct information, then you can take steps (I also have it). x

I typed this into Goodle and came up with lots of websites confirming this.

can strep b be passed on through hands

my results if this link works

(ps my baby was prem, but still healthy and untouched by the strep b - I really don't want to cause you extra worry)

brightredballoon · 08/12/2009 17:52

Thanks for the links GG, I will send these to MIL who is so hard to get her to wash her hands before handling a newborn (like you say its just good basic hygiene practice).

I didnt labour/waters were fully intact with DS, it was a crash section but he did get cut whilst they did the cs so maybe the amniotic fluid was infected or maybe I passed it to him in the first 2 days after birth?
