shoulder dystocia - help

Hi after relatively normal pregancy needed assistance during labour and then devastated to be told that baby has shoulder dystocia.

Have now entered a world of guilt, upset and frustration as I can find little information on the web which is of use and am being told to wait and see by hospital who seem in no hurry to have baby referred.

If anyone has any experience of this which has hopefully had a positive/managable outcome I would really be grateful to hear it.

Why would your baby need refering ? i thought this was quite common , and aslong as it is picked up ,most babies are delivered safely ? Why the guilt ? you have no control at all on the posisition a baby presents in at labour , obviously if you know then occasionally you can make a baby turn one way or another ,but the little blighters have a habit of being awkward! Did your baby have a good apgar score at birth ? Sorry for all the questions and hopefully you will get lots of people coming on soon with happy outcomes to reassure you ,two of my friends babys presented as shoulder dystocia at birth and both children are absolutely fine

Do you mean that your baby has damage caused by shoulder dystocia during delivery?
My daughter's birth was complicated by shoulder dystocia - but she is fine. Wasn't assessed by anyone other than the registrar saying that she may have numb arms for the first few hours, but she was using them ok a few hours after the birth. Didn't have anymore follow up than that - she's now 6 and fine.- the aftereffects of her rescue (McRoberts position, extended episitomy and ventouse) are more of a problem for me though.

sorry should have been clearer- guilt not quite sure guess looking for an emotion to cling to. She had a low apgar at birth went up to 10 by 5mins but know that she was in distress and so action had to be taken.
Registrar did see her and has said that she needs to be referred for physio with possible surgery if that does not work. She has movement in wrist and hands but nothing in elbow or shoulder and has been a week now with no change. Should mention that physio sheet given on discharge headed shoulder diystocia/erb's palsy.
Good to hear that the children mentioned are fine- it helps

So sorry to hear that , hopefully someone will be along soon with a more experienced view ,perhaps if you post on general health ,you might get more people seeing it who have experience ,but are well passed the 'childbirth' topic ,iyswim.
