Just back from second false labour alarm at hospital in past fortnight and well and truly fed up! This time was very different from last episode, and I'm all confused about what to think.
39+1 today. Severeral nights in the past week have had labour type pains (second baby so know what a contraction is like) which came to nothing and stronger, longer braxton hicks.
Today walked DD to nursery, on way home bent down to say hello to friendly cat, and felt something give. When got in house felt warm gush of fluid between legs and was damp through to trousers.
Phoned in (having home birth) and they said as no contractions to go with it to come in.
Couldn't tell from the pad as it was too absorbent (I took it with me), baby happy, still plenty of amniotic fluid to be seen on scan.

To make it all worse the mau was the busiest I have ever seen it. There was a poor woman who looked in transition in the tiny waiting room and another very distressed woman in curtain next to me who had had so many loses and a toddler with her. I just wanted to run in and give her a hug. The doctor who did my internal confused my case with someone else, told me I had a nasty urine infection and had probably wet myself. I informed him I hadn't even given him a sample!!

Now, am happy baby is happy, but confused as to what has happened. They said no sign of waters. Wouldn't I feel an urge to wee if it had been urine? It didn't smell like urine.

I just want my homebirth so I don't have to go back there again!!!

you can have hormones leak?

YanknCock · 18/11/2009 20:23

I had something very similar at 39+4. Felt a big gush, went in, pad too absorbant, nothing happening contraction-wise so was told it was probably just discharge. When my waters did actually go in labour it was a hell of a lot more!

However.....6 hours after this gush, I started having contractions. That makes me wonder if I hadn't sprung a small leak. I'm sure others will be along with stories of leaking waters and be able to help you figure it out!

Fore waters or hind waters?? Whichever come first. Same thing happened to me with DC2, waters went but not that much came out and no contractions. I went in for monitoring and they just couldn't tell me if it was my waters or not but it definately was they just kept coming for hours with each contraction there was a gush . DS was born 18 hours later. Good luck for your HB.

My contractions started a few hours later.

Well, no sign of contractions. It was at about 1pm this afternoon.
First 'false alarm' was a much smaller gush at 37/2. Also didn't feel like urine but was considerably less liquid.
Just spoke to friend and she suggested ringing midwife or gp tomorrow to see if they have any test strips available so can test straight away if it happens again.

Does it smell like freshly cut grass??? Someone told me that once and it was true for both of my babies. Broken waters might keep 'leaking' as there is more water behind the baby. Both my births my waters broke and the contractions started some time later. Happy birthing!

hairtwiddler · 18/11/2009 20:51

Not that I recall, but didn't smell like urine. I have a blocked nose though due to pregnancy rhinitus!

Not really something you can ask your birthing partner to smell for you...hehehe!

The poor man has been through enough today. It was awful sitting in a tiny waiting room watching that poor woman in really painful labour. Most men don't want to see their own partners in pain, let alone anyone else for a prolonged period of time.
I hope that girl is ok and has her baby now.

Just googled, ht - nitrazine strips, apparently, and yes, it's ph above 7 you're looking out for. They are more sensitive than litmus, acc to wikipedia.

Quick update. Midwife sort of agreed could have been hindwaters going. Took me all day to find one of my community ones and could not get call back from nice GP until tomorrow. Not really impressed. Have been slow and waddling more today but no repeat performance and no contractions either!
Tried to ask about the nitrazine strips, hab, but they don't keep them, as they're not reliable either.
I was told that if I have a gush of waters again I should wait a few hours if no contractions to see what happens before calling MAU. May save me trip in to hospital again. Would be ironic if I had to rush home to give birth!
