Is any kind of music ok for childbirth??? Or does it have to be appropriate?

Am going to do a CD for labour as the hospital said we can bring something in if we like.
When I had ds I took in a cd called 'A Time For Peace' which my massage lady gave to me, and is something I use to relax to when having a treatment. (BTW it never came out of the labour bag)

However I LOVE the Killers, its the one thing I can really get lost in/sing along with etc etc and I wanted to do a CD full of my fave Killer's tracks.

Do you think thats innappropriate? Should it be something peaceful and relaxing, or just something you enjoy?

Pavlov thankyou for reminding me 10,000 Maniacs exist. Have just found the vinyl.

phlossie · 24/09/2009 13:15

I had 'Breathe' by the The Prodigy on my CD - 'Breathe with me / Inhale, inhale, you're the victim'

It made me laugh

Sunshinemambo · 24/09/2009 13:46

I was induced and in labour for 4 days. During that time we had every single classical piece on our i-pod played more than once, except for the music from the Omen. Everything the start of that came on DP would hare across the room and hit next track

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 24/09/2009 14:09

alana - i just found an old cd too - pj harvey! I am not sure how calming that would be for child birth though .

I love 10,000 maniacs. Reminds me of very happy growing up times, along with counting crows, indigo girls, Bare Naked Ladies lost of chilled out sundays and camp fires were had so I guess that is why I had them for child birth.

cream ibiza anthems 2009 at 3am-8am whilst looking at old holiday photos on a laptop and knocking myself out on gas and air - I truly enjoyed that bit. The midwife came and laughed and said " are we having a rave here?" Then the docs said I had to have an epidural for high blood pressure and they took the gas and air off me and it wasn't the same. DH took a photo of me and I'm smiling in labour. I switched it all off after transition and took it all abit more seriously when I had to push the next afternoon.

I had my second to "Word Up" by Cameo. I wanted something energetic!

thegrammerpolicesic · 24/09/2009 17:46

Everybody Hurts by REM. Came on the radio just as the really painful bit of ds coming out happened. Very appropriate.

fadingfast · 24/09/2009 22:36

My DH amused himself for days (weeks?) ahead of the day by compiling me a cd of music to take to hospital. It included:
'My baby just cares for me' (Nina Simone)
'Too busy thinking about my baby' (Marvin Gaye)
'Push it' (Garbage)
'Lovely head' (Goldfrapp)
'Born of frustration' (James)
'Signed, sealed, delivered' (Stevie Wonder)

Bit of an eclectic mix but it kept me entertained. Can't actually remember what was on when DS was actually born though.

babymutha · 25/09/2009 01:39

sorry to be a big ole hippy - but I had a home birth and while the early contractions were accompanied by all manner of lively dance anthems when it got to the long haul hours through the night I had a compilation of African Blues - hypnotic and wonderful! That and the geranium oil got me through the whole thing (oh yes and the wonderful NHS midwives and my DH of course....)

nooka · 25/09/2009 04:12

I think you really need to take a mix because there is no way you can tell what you will need. ds was born to Every Little Thing she does is Magic! But that was on the radio, and he was a c-section, so I didn't actually do anything. We started off with A Man in a Room Gambling for the beginning of dd's birth, but I can't remember what came after that...

Norah Jones irritated the shit out of me the first time (Dd) when I put it on in the hospital. I was busy having a baby, I found, and in no mood to be distracted by weirdie warbling.

Ds1 I laboured mainly at home through the night - and listened to the Libertines for about ten hours straight. Absolutely loved it. It's great middle of the night peaceful music. It still makes me smile in recollection. After Ds was born, we put on Bach cello CD. The sun was setting, the lights were off, and it was me, Dh and our new baby. Was beautiful.

It has to be classic queen - under pressure ... don't stop me now!!!

Prodigy - Take me to the Hospital

AnathemaDevice · 25/09/2009 13:00

I took my MP3 player with me as I didn't know what I would want to listen to when te time came. I ended up listening to Everything Must Go by the Manics. I think it helped to have an album that was reasonably calm but not too quiet, and one I knew all the words too. I found concentrating on mouthing along to the songs (didn't have the energy to actually sing) helped take my mind off the pain.
DS arrived during the song 'Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky' which contains the lyric 'Harvest your ovaries, dead mothers crawl' which couldn't have been more inappropriate, but by that point I really didn't care.

FanjolinaJolie · 25/09/2009 19:33

Aaaaahhhh Push it...Push it REAL GOOD!! Think it was Mel & Kim??

Might be a good choice??

DawnAS · 26/09/2009 21:45

Hmmmm, I reckon a compilation of Disney songs!! Keeping "Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho it's off to work we go" on a loop, followed by "Can you feel the love tonight" as LO emerges!!

LissyGlitter · 26/09/2009 21:59

I ended up with an emergency section and they wouldn't let us have our music and insisted on the radio. It was particularly awful, so I ended up distracting myself from the fear by singing Faster by the manics.

This time will probably be another section, but I will take my MP3 player to psych myself up beforehand. I'm thinking a mixture of PJ Harvey, Manics and Pulp should do it MP3 player was the thing I wanted most after the birth of DD - felt so out of control, it would have been nice to have something that was "me", instead of this weird lactating, bleeding, sweating monster I had become!

MavisGrind · 26/09/2009 22:16

I had my ipod for ds2 with my running playlist on - Chemical Brothers, Faithless, that type of thing. Didn't think about the adrenaline issue - it was great and meant I only needed G&A.

Needless to say, haven't been running since so not sure what memories it'll bring back when I play those songs in that order again!

crankytwanky · 26/09/2009 22:42

Lordy Flower, you remind me of when I was having DC1 and "D"P put radio 2 on. It was Dale sodding Winton. The Floral Dance (or something) came on. And some bagpipe players. Then Chesney Hawkes. Then Westlife. I was in too much pain to object, but it was torturous.

DC2, Jill Scott. Was bliss

Dawn what about Happy working song" from enchanted? Perfect!.

Phoenix4725 · 27/09/2009 09:47

HSMM · 27/09/2009 10:11

Spent ages making my CD and I don't remember actually hearing any of it! (although I do know it was playing, because the MW asked if we had some music)

StealthPolarBear · 27/09/2009 10:17

I had pantera on my fantasy one (never actually transferred to the ipod as I knew there'd be no point)

forehead · 27/09/2009 12:00

What about' Push It' by Salt N Peppa.

3rdnparty · 27/09/2009 14:41

Hopsital had radio on whilst having my section so dh lovingly created cd never made it out of the bag .... here comes the sun by the beatles playing when baby(ds) appeared... makes me blub a lot when i hear it now.

3rdnparty · 27/09/2009 14:45

meant to say have what you want- it may be an idea to have a couple of diffferent style cds you may feel the need for different things at different times....
