Very true for me. First was sixteen hours gas & air, pethadine, assisted delivery and pph - not nice. Second woke me in the night at 3am and was born in hospital at 5:20am, no pain relief, really uplifting empowering experience,

True for me too.

overall length of labour (from first twinges to baby in arms) was pretty similar. However established labour and second stage were much quicker with number 2 - about 45 minutes in total! Gas and air with both - but only for the last 10 minutes with DD2 - the midwives and I both forgot I'd asked for it.....

Much better. In (slow) labour for 40+ hours with first. Horrible.

Second was born 20 mins after arrived at hosp. No pain relief. Would do it again tomorrow if I could. I actually enjoyed it!

DD 16h30 inc 2hrs pushing, episiotomy
DS 2h10 inc 10 mins pushing, 3rd degree tear but not because of the speed (10lb2 baby with huge head, arm came out with head )

Recovered more quickly 2nd time too, despite only 19mo gap.

Have heard it's 3rd time round that's tricky. Still temped tho...

1st - induced at 9pm, ds1 born at 4.45am the next day with just gas and air

2nd water borke at 3am, contractions began about 2pm, ds2 born at 5.05pm with just TENS. We only just made it to the hospital!

sweetkitty · 19/10/2009 21:38

first 4h20m came out with her hand at her head nice tear and she was only 6lbs 3oz

second 2h30m 9lbs 3ozs homebirth not even a graze, hard at the time but felt great afterwards

Twit · 19/10/2009 21:43

yes, 2nd one was easier and faster.

Fleecy · 19/10/2009 21:53

Ooh Sweetkitty, that's good to know. I'm worried about going for no. 3 because I tore last time but good to know that doesn't always happen again!

sweetkitty · 19/10/2009 22:04

My first was the smallest and a second degree tear, second biggest and nothing, third was only a graze

ilikeyoursleeves · 19/10/2009 22:07

DS1- four day labour, Wed-Sunday!!! Very ouch.

DS2- 6 hour labour!!! 11pm to 5am, born on SIL's bathroom floor as I couldn't get to hospital in time.

So yes, 2nd labours and far quicker! And easier too

Good luck!
