Waters breaking, slow labour - Lulu / Mears

Babieseverywhere · 21/08/2009 08:41

Not me, but my sister is in labour...yeah - on her due date

She started slowly at 4am this morning, midwife out to check her at 9am (first time planned home birth) and her waters broke whilst midwife was there.

She has been given until 5pm before she HAS to go to hospital, says the midwife.

My sister's labour stopped and after walking around a bit, started slowly again.

This is how my first nightmare labour started, when I was forced into hospital and had a waterfall interventions and a forcep delivery in a surgical room.

I want better for her. I have asked my mother to pass on the homebirth website details so they can look up PROM (and by association Strep B) and so they could take temps to check she hasn't got a fever etc.

I know the guidelines changed last year and they no longer ALLOW mothers to wait and see at home after waters have gone. Did the risk of doing so increase or is it a guidelines only change IYSWIM ?

I still have nightmares about my first birth and I want better for my sister.

Is there anything I can do ? I would hate her to suffer like I did

PS. I am sat here with everything crossed that she has her baby daughter naturally before 5pm of course

Be sure and let us know how it goes Babies.

sheepish at you other two.

You know I always said that wild horses and buckets of gold wouldn't drag me anywhere near Liverpool and its surrounding areas but there are a couple of people that seem to undo my horrific and cruel prejudices.

LuluMaman · 21/08/2009 11:27

erm, thanks , i think !!

largeginandtonic · 21/08/2009 13:29

Hullo Lulu

There is no 'deadline' for induction. It is becoming more common for women to be given the choice after 24 hours if they want acceleration of labour. As long as temp is normal, fetal movements felt and liquor remains clear. However, being sensible there is obviously a limit to how long your sister will want to wait so maybe make a plan and discuss the NICE guidelines with your midwife (available on the NICE website)especially in the light of limited evidence to suggest the effectiveness of antibiotics in labour and their long term ill effects.

Update.Midwife has visited and said she is progressing and has left again !!!

Midwife said DSis had to go to hospital if baby hasn't arrived by midnight. So another few hours leeway, plenty of time for a lovely homebirth.

Sounds good. Plenty of walking, dancing bouncing on birthball etc. Keep her eating and drinking and visiting the loo. Above all, positive vibes! labouring women are very sensitive to the attitudes of those around them. If possible, get her to have a smooch/snog with her other half, get that oxytocin flowing. How exciting!

Babieseverywhere · 21/08/2009 17:04

I'm not with her She is at the other side of the country, with her DH.

I am pacing up and down, waiting for more news.

Babieseverywhere · 21/08/2009 22:28

No news and no card.

DD woke DS up when she went to bed and he refuses to go back to bed alone...grrr.

He has been running around and shouting for the last couple of hours.

Just trying to nurse him to sleep (again)

Dsis transfered into hospital at 12.

I am so hopeing that things are going OK. Don't know why she transfered just that her and baby are alright.

Please let her have a better time in hospital than I did.

I have been pacing a bit, DS in a back carry snoring away as I make a congratulations card for my sister. At midnight when I got the updated phone call off my mother, I put the date on the card, it must be the 22nd August.

Happy Birthday to be Dear Niece. I hope you come soon, we all look forward to meeting you.

Off to bed.

lovely news xxxx

Babieseverywhere · 22/08/2009 20:26

Seen my sister and her new baby.

Sadly my sister had a similar birth to my first, differing slightly in details but not a nice home birth at all.

I had a chat to her on my own when we tried to get DN nursing and I am so proud of how she is copeing.

Baby has several cuts on her head and is highly bruised on her head, shoulders and back and is very sleepy.

Baby has briefly latched on three times since 2.30am (this was at 2pm in the afternoon)

I encouraged her to undress her baby and hold her skin to skin, baby latched briefly but only sucked gently and fell back asleep.

The midwifes had already suggested expressing, my sister was unsure but thought she would have a go. So as I left a midwife came to help her hand express.

We had a chat about keeping baby skin to skin as much as possible and watching for early feeding cues and how to break and reattach if she feels the latch isn't right. My sister has flat nipples like I do, with make latching a bit more tricky for a newborn.

I am going to take in some of the breastfeeding support help lines tomorrow and I am carrying my mobile around 24/7.

Is there anything else I should be suggesting ?

No longer Trees, back to normal name...

Congratulations.

I'm so sorry that it wasn't the delivery she wanted. I remember the cuts and bruises on my dd very well indeed.

How is the baby feeding now? I was told when dd was born that I shouldn't worry for the first 24hrs and in fact she didn't feed at all. Was jaundiced, sleepy and very bruised. I allowed her days of unfettered skin to skin access and bfing was fine though she was sleepy for days.

You sound like a lovely sister. Let her talk as much as she wants. Had a 'don't dwell on it' vibe here and it didn't help.

Has she chosen a name?

Babieseverywhere · 23/08/2009 19:59

My sister knows I am here if she needs to talk, we are close.

The baby is called Matilda isn't that a beautiful name for a beautiful baby.

My parents visited today and my DN is more awake and nursing well and my sister looking much better also. Hopefully they should be home by now.

I can't wait to see them again, though we are waiting for an invite. My mum thinks they are planning to babymoon for a while just sister, DH and DD. Before they let their many friends and family start visiting regularly. Good on them.

I am so pleased that they are both are doing so well today

ShowOfHands · 23/08/2009 20:43

Well it's absolutely the best name in the world for a beautiful baby. And it's a cracking name for a beautiful little 2.3yr old who is tucked up in bed upstairs.

How wonderful. I hope she continues to thrive.

Babieseverywhere · 23/08/2009 21:28

LOL, Great name for a toddler too

This is the card I made for them whilst pacing around waiting for her to arrive with my sleeping baby on my back in a sling.

ShowOfHands · 23/08/2009 21:37

Oh that card is beautiful.

My brother and SIL are expecting dd3 in a couple of months and I've just bought some pink ribbon in anticipation of card making!

Babieseverywhere · 23/08/2009 21:52

Thanks I'm relatively new to card making, this is only my second tri shutter fold card, but it was fun to do.

TigerFeet · 24/08/2009 09:16

Oh BE I'm sitting here with a tear in my eye even though I barely know your sister. Please send her my congratulations and love

Glad to hear that they are most likely home by now.

That card is beautiful

(will ring you this evening)

Babieseverywhere · 24/08/2009 09:30
