Best birthing position

Hi there - I'm due to give birth soon (first time) and was wondering if there were particular positions that you found better than others?
For example, I really don't want to be flat on my back as I feel (in an ungrounded kind of a way) that I won't feel 'in control'.

What positions did you find best?

I would've given birth standing, which is how I spent my entire labour. But the midwives saw fit to insist I lie on the bed. 3 stitches later...

rachels103 you are my heroine!!!! Especially after your first experience to opt for no pain relief!
I have found this thread very useful as I am expecting my first in 20 weeks. I hope to use hypnobirthing - am in a mind-over-matter stage about the birth at the moment and it seems to suit me quite well!

Sat on toilet, everytime I got off I felt like I needed to go again, it is handy as it contains any mess and is similar to birthing stool in positioning. Actual delivery was standing up for baby and lying down for placenta. Bounced up and down on birthing ball for a while in early labour until I decided it was too hard and pregnancy brain did not think of releasing some air to soften it up a bit. DOH.
