Query on Sweeps

I am 36 wks pregnant after suffering 6 m/c. My MW told me today that if nothing was doing at 38+ wks they would do a sweep due to my history, I feel stupid asking this question but after having internals done, what difference is there with a sweep, as this has never been an option for me before. Thanks for any advice.

A sweep takes place during an internal examination. Your GP or mw will put a finger inside your cervix (if it is sufficiently open) and run it around the inside of it. This will release a small amount of the membranes from your cervix and hopefully put you into labour. It may be a little uncomfortable but should not be painful.

edd - It worked really well for me. Had a sweep when I was 2-3cm dilated, but not contracting. 48-ish hours later dd was born.
