So what would you call a big or heavy baby?

A friend just had her son at 8½ lbs. I can't think if that's big or not. She's Japanese and her DH is English. I guess for a Japanese woman, it could be big.

Anyone know the range of size, please?

DD - 8lbs 4oz (3.750kg) and considered a big baby in France.

DS - 9lbs 4oz (4.150kg) and considered a 'fat' baby, his blood sugars were tested several times.

Mine were 8lb 6, 8lb and 8lb 1oz and none of them were big- just a nice size.

I would say that over 9lb is on the larger side and anything over 10lb is huge

DD was 9lb 5 and I was a size 8 5ft-er at the start of pregnancy. She felt lovely and not too new baby-ish when she was born, if that makes sense? However I've kept the 5ft (boooo!) but will never see an 8 again...or 10, perhaps 12!

Basically I think she felt bigger because I was littler to start with!

I recently had DS2 who was 4.52 kilos. This just triggered the blood sugar testing. I am glad he had it though as it quickly became apparent that there was something wrong and he ended up having a course of antibiotics to sort him out. Within 3 days he was fine {smile]

PinkTulips · 29/07/2009 22:02

ds1 was 8lbs10 and i get lots of 'wow a big lad' comments about him

ds2 was 8lbs2ozs but was sent to scbu where he looked like a freaking overgrown mutant compared to the teeny weeny premmie babies all around him

katie3677 · 29/07/2009 22:07

DS was 11lb 5oz, vaginal birth and I tested negative for GD (three times!), DD was 11lb 2oz CS (I'm not a complete masochist!) and I was diagnosed with GD, thankfully her blood sugars were normal. Although considered 'big' babies, and they are both still on the 97th centile, I am 5'11 and DH is 6'3, so medical staff not at all concerned.

i was told my DD was a 'big baby' at 8lb 12oz but she seemed really tiny to me
my youngest brother was 10lb and the docs told my mum she had no chance of delivering for her planned VBAC and pushed her into another csection!! he also seemed very small for 10lb.
i would say anything 9.5-10lb and over would be classed as bigg but it depends on the mum and the perspective

DS 1 9lb 3
DS 2 10lb 14

both vaginal births. Once they repair my prolapses I might get back to normal !!!! Still, its only been three years

OP :I am English and my DH is Japanese. DH was 4.3kg at birth and is now 190cm tall.

My DD was 3.8kg (8lb 4oz)
My DS was 3.7kg (8lb 1oz)

I was told (by the Japanese midwives) that both my babies were big and I get gasps of surprise from other mums when I reveal how 'huge' they were at birth.
The (Japanese) doctor who delivered both children though didn't seem phased by their size and shrugged that DH was tall, so am I, what would you expect?

Think that 6lb or just over, is the average for Japanese babies, though of course they come in all sizes!
As my contractions started getting stronger, I was moved to a room near to the delivery room and I heard the lady 'before me' give her final push. They announced the size as 4lb 4oz and no-one raised an eyebrow at the size.
If you're friend is quite short, even an 8lb baby would be considered big. It's all relative to frame isn't it.

NezLiquide · 31/07/2009 04:53

I live in south east asia and throughout my pregnancy I got the comment 'well it's certainly not an asian baby' no doubt DH was relieved about this as we're both English.

DS was 8lb11oz when he was born and too looked like a giant compared with all the others delivered that day (it was very busy as DS was born on 08/08/08 a v.lucky day for the chinese and there were 15 planned CS that day). But at least he was easy to identify

ThingOne · 31/07/2009 07:07

I'm 5'2" and my DS1 was 8lb 3. He wasn't a big baby for me although his head at 99th centile was a bit on the large side.

For anyone worried about a big baby, please have a look at this website, which aims to remove the myths about big babies being harder/more painful to deliver:

That link didn't work for me: www.bigbaby.org.uk.

Has a quick look and it looks fantastic - wish it had been around 8 years ago when I was expecting DS2, and the MWs were trying to discourage me from a home birth.

DS1 was 10lb 5oz and was put into icu, ff through a tube and given intra venous a-bs as a matter of course.

Found out through NCT research a year or so later that it's only premmie babies who are at risk from GD - full termers have the resources to cope.

DD was born at home weighing 11lb 10oz - refused blood sugar test.

The MWs were freaked out at the prospect of delivering another whopper, even though the homebirth consultant wrote in my notes that size couldn't be determined from scans or palpation.

DS2 was 8lb 10oz - seemed such a tiddler as I could hold him in the crook of one arm.
I think it's relevant that I had given up sugar by the time I was expecting him.

ABitBatty · 31/07/2009 13:10

I am 5.1" and my DS3 was 10lb7.5oz DS2 was 8lb13.5oz and DS1 was a tiny 7lb6.5oz. Mine get bigger and bigger I wonder if I have another what size s/he will be!

ruddynorah · 31/07/2009 13:21

dd was 8lb 14oz. i flet like i never had a teeny tiny baby stage with her she always seemed huge to me, and i'm a little over 5ft. dh is maybe 5ft 4. we were both 6lb babies so came as quite a shock to produce dd who was, in my mind, a big baby. no tearing or anything though, all fine, even though she came out like superman.
