Birthing Pool - To buy new or 2nd hand??? Can't decide!

Hi All,

I'm new here & 34 weeks pg with my 3rd baby. I'd always assumed I'd have a water birth as I just love being in the water. Unfortunately my Son was almost 4 weeks early so I wasn't allowed a water birth :-(, then with my 2nd, our Daughter, I had a fantastic homebirth but couldn't afford to buy a birthing pool or hire one.

As this is going to be our last child I really want to try for a water birth at home. I'd made my mind up to buy off of ebay 2nd hand but since doing a bit of research I now can't decide.

We'd only need the pool, liner and submersible pump as we already have a fast electric pump for inflating the pool, a tarpaulin & a few other bits. The problem is that to get these items I either have to buy them all (apart from the liner) 2nd hand which still works out rather expensive or buy new and as a kit but then we get loads of items we don't need!

I can't buy it until my maternity grant comes through either (why do they take so long!!!).

I'd really appreciate your advice/help.

Also, if anyone is selling their la bassine pool etc I'd be interested.

Thanks in advance

hi massive, I went for second hand in the end when I got mine.
it's a la bassine, and you don't need a liner for it. (i don't even think they make liners for them)
I used it last time and we just cleaned it with milton. planning on using it again for number 3 who is due in just under 2 weeks and will do the same again.

bear in mind it's not going to be sterile once you've filled it and got in, so the liner isn't that important. plus, hospital birth pools are used by multiple women and don't have liners either.

erm yeh, assuming my baby isn't hugely late I'll be selling the pool in a few weeks, but might be too late for you?

VoteMerlin · 25/05/2009 18:53

You can hire one!

A friend of mine did for both, and it wasn't as expensive as buying....

massivebump · 25/05/2009 18:55

Thanks Thisisyesterday

I've seen liners on their website, just assumed you'd need one. I'd be happy to just sterilise it though.

Good luck with No3 & I'll keep you posted if I can wait that long for the pool :-)

Thanks

The hire charges I've seen are sooooo expensive. Much more than buying then selling on (or using at home for ball pool or whatever) + they don't look that practical as they're hard sided.

Thanks though

we hired a hard sided one first time and bought a second hand La bassine pool in a box for the next. the inflatable one was sooooo comfy! we paid £30, it was on ebay and the poor lady who owned it originally hadn't had the water birth she'd hoped for so although it was second hand, it was never used. didn't need a liner. can't rate it highly enough - if you are in The Midlands you could have mine!

HI there I had a new one but never actually got to use it as DD came too fast. So I guess it's sort of second hand though never used! It's on the wanted/for sale boards if you're interested. When I was looking I left it too late to do any proper research and ended up getting a new one as it was the easiest option. But there do seem to be loads out there that are pre-owned but never used, which might suit you?

Hi MassiveBump

I have a regular Eco birth pool that I bought from "Birth Pool in a Box". You can check it out and all the relevant details at the following link:

www.birthpoolinabox.co.uk/birth-pool-eco-regular

I used it for pain relief during labour only (at the end of March) and it was used with a liner so the pool itself was protected. If you are able to collect it from Balham in South London I'd be more than happy to sell it to you for an agreed price. I have all the bits and pieces with it, including a fitted heat cover which can be used to conserve heat whilst your filling the pool or waiting for established labour. However, I'd be happy to just sell you the pool if that's all you were interested in?

Let me know if you'd like it, I'm just about to post it on the buy/sell section too.

Either way, best of luck with the birth, if it hasn't already happened! :-)xx

Agree the liner not necessary but it does make for easier cleaning up after the birth but if you get a pool and bob around in it before hand just a good clean and sterelise with milton in between fillings will do.
I have a regular birth pool in a box (just going out to get a hose to fill it right now actually for a few practice runs) it isn't new I got a loan of it from a friend.

Hi Emma, I have tired to search for your website but cannot find it? Can you tell me how much you hire the full birth pool and kits for please?

Thanks
Naomi

I would recommend buying. I bought for my last one but didn't get chance to use it so I could send it back and get my money back. Much more cost effective than renting or buying second hand.
