Girls is it normal to still be bleeding 5 weeks after? It has slowed down and sometimes stops for a day then starts again. Its very light but I am concerned about it.

Great, thankyou both so much for the reassurance last thing I have time for a the moment is a trip to the docs! It is as you both say not heavy or painful so I will be patient : )

tis ok. becoming a mum is a hrad enough job, throwing in trips to docs is a chore you don;t need right now

congratulations on the new baby BTW

when is your post-natal check-up?? I know some health authorities do them at 6wks, others at 8wks. if you are still bleeding then, that is the time to go thru any worries

I wouldn't worry, I think I bled (lightly - a bit stop / start like you describe, but still sometimes proper red bleeding) for about 7 weeks after my (emergency) c-section. I remember asking GP at 6 week check if it was ok, and being told that it was absolutely fine as long as not v heavy / vey large clots.

psychomum5 · 25/05/2009 15:05

I have never had a C-section, but I have had five babies, and not stopped bleeding after each one until they were at least 6wks old.

some people just bleed for longer IME.

please try not to fret. if it was heavy, with clots, smelly, painful etc, then I would say get checked out, but the way you describe sounds pretty normal to me.

I gave birth 5 and a half weeks ago and am still bleeding. You aren't alone!

aoifesmama · 25/05/2009 23:23

7 weeks and just stopping! (was emergency cs, not sure if that makes a diff)

jeaux90 · 26/05/2009 11:55

My c section was scheduled as I had polyhyramnious and my DD was breech so didn't go through labour which I thought would mean the bleeding would be lighter! Ho hum, how wrong was I!

My next check is a couple of weeks but I live out in the middle east so will make an appointment for sooner if it hasn't stopped by the end of the week.

I thought the whole c section thing was sooo weird!

I am in a similar situation, I had Lucy 5 weeks and 6 days ago, bled for 4 weeks then stopped for 2 days with some discharge. Then started bleeding really heavily with large clots 9 days ago, went to gp on friday when it happened to be less heavy for the one day! She said it was a period? Anyway bleeding is still really heavy with large clots going through 10+ maternity pads a day so may need to visit gp again.

Fyi, the lochia blood is from the wound that is left where the placenta comes away from the uterine wall, so is the same whatever type of birth you have. If you are stopping and starting it's likely you are doing more, and therefore opening the wound again IYSWIM? Mine cleared up quite quickly at 6 weeks.

Sorry to hijack - I was going to ask about this... I stopped for about a week, and there was just a tiny bit of brownish discharge - I thought I'd be able to stop wearing pads soon. Then it started again - for the past few days, I've had quite a lot of bright red blood loss with fairly large clots (not the size of golf balls though).

I haemorraged after having my baby (she's 5 weeks on Friday) and I had to have an oxytocin drip and a catheter, etc. Then I had a womb infection. So I don't know if it's due to that. But some of you say bleeding can be on and off and it does go bright red again - so maybe I shouldn't worry? Maybe I'm doing too much. I wouldn't worry about light bleeding that stops and starts. But, bright red that you can feel flowing out (like I can!) is something I'd have checked (I will be). But, I don't think there's any harm in getting yourself checked if you're worried.

I bled for nearly 10 weeks after my em c/s.

I was really really over it by the end .

It just seems to carry on for a long time with some people and if you do too much it can get heavier.
