13 days overdue today and really want my homebirth that i've planned for so long. DS was pretty much on time so never anticipated still being pregnant at this stage. Have fab independent midwives who aren't really concerned yet but have hospital appointment tomorrow afternoon where I imagine they'll be pressing me for induction.
Have seriously tried everything bar castor oil but baby very comfy in there!
I've been very emotional the last few days and swing between wanting to hang on and stay in control, to just wanting it all to end. Feel sad that all the hypnobirthing, yoga, acupuncture etc may have been in vain. Every night for the last two weeks at least I've gone to bed thinking maybe tonight is the night, but no.
Bump is now huge and very uncomfortable especially trying to look after a toddler. Anyone else been in a similar situation?

awww. won't be long now.

thinking of you and looking forward to hearing news of your babys arrival soon!

I don't get it ; natural human gestation is between 37 - 42 weeks, yet Medicine has programmed us to accept that anything after 40 weeks is 'overdue' and that pushing for Induction at 40+1 becomes the norm.

Does Medicine just round up the figure to a nice fat 40? Is 'Liability' the factor from the medical professions's point of view?

If scans are available at 42 weeks+ to check the placenta is still functioning fine and baby's fine, why isn't Nature allowed to take it's course?

After all, our due dates, unless you know the exact date of conception, are like that other big Profession also known as a science (wrongly in my opinion!) called Weather Forecasting, where it's all based on PREDICTION and AVERAGES. In other words, GUESS WORK! Satellite weather maps don't take account of Chaos Theory or 'Randomness'!

Any news, anything ???

saramoon · 28/05/2009 13:19

Was induced with both of my dds. They were 10 and 12 days overdue. With the first i just said yes, please induce me and get this baby out and was adament that i wouldn't be induced with the 2nd but nearly 42 weeks and i just said yes, please induce me and get this baby out. Just so uncomfortable with the 2nd and couldn't even sit down on the sofa properly. Of course i would rather have gone into labour at home and stayed at home as long as poss but at time, i was so fed up and big.

learnermummy · 28/05/2009 15:13

puffylovett · 29/05/2009 09:27

ooh fantastic, well done !! can we have details please (from eagerly needing a homebirth this time round soon to be a second mum dreading the labour even though the first was a good one !!)

learnermummy · 29/05/2009 11:59

Details - well all happened a bit quick really. Hubby left house at 8.30 to drop DS1 at nusery and at that point I was feeling fine. Rang IM at 8.40 to say still having the odd back pain type contraction and did she think we should progress to final last ditch attempt of castor oil. Contractions weren't any more frequent than every 10 mins and lasting only 20sec or so so she said she'd call round in a hour or so to have a look. As soon as I put phone down everything seemed to escalate and I jumped into hot bath. At 5 to 9 I was getting a bit panicky and phoned hubby to say get a move on! He got home at 9 at which point contractions were strong and every 3 mins. Managed to get him to phone IM and start filling pool downstairs in between contractions. Think 1st IM got here about 9.45 and I then managed to run downstairs in between contractions and literally leap into the pool! About 10 mins later the gas and air was ready and that helped. Second stage lasted about half an hour and DS2 was born in the pool at 10.35! Slight 2nd degree tear due to his size but have left it to heal on own with strict instructions to stay in bed for 5 days - suits me! Still can't believe it. DS2 is perfect and very hungry. DS1 having a nice time at Granny's today. Homebirth absolutely fab. So nice to be tucked up in your own bed afterwards. Good luck to other homebirthers.

Oh well done. Homebirths in pools are great aren't they. DD2 was born at 13.15 and IM was gone by 4.30pm and we were watching tv !! All a bit bizarre but great

TaurielTest · 29/05/2009 12:18

Hooray

puffylovett · 29/05/2009 16:01

oh it sounds wonderful, I can't wait now

swottybetty · 29/05/2009 20:51

awww! congrats to you and your family and a big welcome to your new arrival. i am also a second timer hoping for a homebirth rather than a mayday induction so its been good to read this thread.

doulalc · 29/05/2009 23:02

farmgirl.....to make it worse, it's not that long ago that "term" was moved forward to include 37 weeks instead of the old standard 38. Some paeds are not thrilled with the change as with the increase in inductions, some babies are earlier than once thought.

Congrats learnermummy......glad to hear things turned out so well for you...

TamTam29 · 01/06/2009 14:17

Hi, i was in a similar boat with DS1 as desperate to have waterbirth (rather than your home birth) and spent most of the last week of pregnancy in tears!

Spent hours on internet which made things worse as lots of evidence against inducing because baby is overdue, however it goes againt all our contries NICE guidelines

However, my expereince wasnt as negative as I had expected, Had a sweep day before (my 2nd) which produced a show, had already started dilating, so had ARM, waited couple hours then syntocin drip, managed on gas & air till drip turned up, had epidural. Needed no interventions and only very slight tear that didnt need stitching.

DS was born in under 12 hours from arriving at hospital.

I am now 5 days late & looking at going through the whole expereince again - however with DS1 to sort out an induction would make practicalities a bit simpler as my Mum is good hour away!

I know from my research that you can arrange private midwifes that allow you to go over due date, but dunno if it is too late to arrange??

TamTam29 · 01/06/2009 14:20

Sorry - i need to say congratulations! didnt realise there was a third page to this thread

Farmgirls i feel exactly the same as you! Although being 5 days overdue in this weather an induction is becoming more & more appealing!! lol

lovemybump · 04/06/2009 09:21

Learnermummy - how did it go in the end? I am 40+13 days today in the same situation like you back then and curious whether you went into spontenious labor and how long more did you have to wait. or had to be induced. I am sure you already had your baby and are probably very busy now. I would much appreciate it if you have any advise for us still waiting. thanks a lot and good luck with the baby....

KingCanuteIAm · 04/06/2009 09:34

lovemybump, learnermummy posted the details a bit further up
