ECV for a breech baby or elective c section

Went for routine check up today at 40 weeks plus 2, to be told the baby has probably moved to breech presentation. Had it confirmed by a scan this evening.

I have a choice now. To either try for a ECV to turn the baby and then go for labour if successful. Or jsut go for a planned c-section.

Not being able to drive will be a real pain as I have older children to get to school, clubs etc.

However also want to do what is safest for the baby.
Have till Friday to decide.

Any experience or advice?

is vaginal breech not an option?

depends really how you feel about it.

if baby has got into this position very recently, then chances are there is room to manipulate moving back, however other side is, if there is room to manouvere him/her, he could go breech again

Does that make sense?

first baby?

They didn't mention vaginal birth. The baby is oblique breech so in essence is sideways...

This will be my third baby.

I think if the ECV is successful then they will induce me straight away so that it doesn't have a chance to move back!

Thanks for that advice. I am off to day assessment today to discuss it, sort out paper work and get pre meds sorted. Will hopefully know more this evening and if all goes well will have it done tomorrow morning.

You could try acupuncture and moxabustion (burning of herbs near the feet - your acupuncturist should be able to do this too) to get the baby to turn head down, Has worked for 3 of my friends.

This book is so helpful and full of tips on turning a breech baby and even delivering a breech baby!

Hi
Had a similar experience - My Baby is breech and I had a ECV last week - I have to say although it was uncomfortable it was bearable. They gave me a quick injection in my thigh (pin prick honest!) to relax my uterus - Then attempted to turn the baby - The consultant lited the babys bum out of my pelvis (most uncomforatble bit) then lifted and tried to turn the baby. it was not painful just uncomfortable - heavy pressure on your tummy enough to take your breath away - Unfortunatly I have a bicornate uterus (heart shaped) so the baby just could not slip round the top. I was scanned constantly. Afterwards I was monitored for 1 hour. The baby was not bothered at all. I was advised of the risks but my hospital stats were very good - only 1 woman in 5 years had gone into labour afterwards (with a successful birth)
I was given choices afterwards as the ECV was unsuccessful to a natural delivery or c section - they did advise me to have a c section has the risks for both mother & baby are reduced. I'm having my baby on wednesday and can't wait to meet him or her. I was very disapppointed that I could not have a natural birth but have now accepted that this is the best option. I'm happy with the decision as the babys health comes first.
I hope all has gone well for you but don't be afraid of the ECV - my experience was certainly not bad at all.... Deep breaths and good commentary from the consultant made it bearable.
