Hello all,
I'm due 8th June with my second child, My first experiance of labor was horrible it ended in an emergancy c-section. I'm gonna try a vaginal birth this time round but i'm really scard of taking any drugs for the pain.
I'm thinking of doing some serious relaxation techniques, and i'm having trouble trying to find a good CD to take in with me. Anyone heard of any good ones??

Complete Relaxation by Glenn Harrold has helped me relax.

firstly, my sympathies. My first labour ended just like yours and it's a horrific thing to go through.

To be honest, I found the best cd's for relaxing me were actually my favourite melodic albums, rather than anything specifically designed to "relax" you. I think, when you're in pain, or panicking and you need to relax, the key thing is distraction.

I found Keane and Coldplay were fantastic on this level. I could sing along either outloud or in my head and it took me to another place.

I also recommend doing this pain distraction test where you ask your partner to pinch you, very hard for 30 seconds. You have to be aware of what you try to do to block out or cope with the pain.

I found I started verbalising - I recognise this as something I do a lot if I'm in pain. Other people prefer to visualise something serene to block it out. There was another way of coping that I can't remember! Anyway, it's useful to discover what your natural response is, then you can plan for the best type of distraction, be it visualising a nice beach, or singing along to Coldplay!

Good luck.

I second listening to music you like, and you can sing along to, if you feel like it. DS came into the world to the Manic Street Preachers (Everything Must Go). I didn't sing out loud, but mouthing along, and concentrating on listening to the album, rather than what was happening contraction-wise, really helped me. It also helped to reminding myself that each contration was one step closer to meeting my baby, and each one was one I would never have to do again!

can i advise putting whatever you choose onto mp3 player & get some mini speakers as i took cds but then no player. had long labour with only a tv. DP still cant watch Heston Blummenthal. I remember a blur of basketball & cricket. not exactly relaxing but needed distracting so dont rely on the labour suite having working radio/cd.

you might want to look into hypnobirthing (mongan method)

and yuo might want to consider TENS and entonox for pain relief, which are not drugs per se, and won't stay in your system if you don;t like or benefit from them

Hypno birthing CD from NCT is fabulous for relaxing. I've been using it for quite a few weeks now.

Hi Tanya, I just wanted to sat that it might also be a good idea to take a cd that you find will motivate you as well as one that will relax you. I was pushing for 3 hours with my Son 10 weeks ago and I was soooo exausted that a chill out/ relaxing cd was making it worse for me to muster up that last bit of energy. In hindsight I really wish I had a more fast 'upbeat' cd to put on!
Good luck and congratulations
